iPads replace paper in a Canadian hospital, making doctor's jobs easier

As per media reports a hospital in Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) has ditched tracking patients and treatment on paper in lieu of an iPad.

The Ottawa Hospital has recently ordered 1,800 iPads for their staff, which will replace medical charts. The hospital has even contacted a local software development company to develop the software which they can use on a day to day basis. The hospital staff already uses 500 Apple tablets.

Doctors at the hospital use the iPads to examine a patient’s X-ray, take note and prescribe drugs during the patients’ visits. Thus, a doctor is able to see all those things which he has prescribed to the patient and thus helping eliminate the traditional paperwork which was earlier being used.

It’s all there on the iPad – medical histories, injury reports and patient allergies – that need to be filled out and filed.

Through an iPad, doctors can now give greater understanding to the patient while at the bedside.

Dale Potter, the man behind the Ottawa Hospital tech transformation, said the hospital will offset the costs of the additional iPads through improved productivity and replacing old equipment. He said not only the device will reduce the errors in reports, but will reduce the amount of rework required on orders entered wrongly by hand.
