App Review: Viddy, an Instagram for Video

By: Aseem Gaurav, May 10, 2011

The social networking world is expanding in much more ways than you can imagine! After photo sharing, multimedia messaging and Instagram, there’s a new buzz in the social media world of an app called Viddy.

In simple words, Viddy does for video what Instagram does for photos. Through this app, a user can convert a raw 15-second mobile video into stylized clips by adding an effect, be it vintage or 3D, and share them with family, friends and the world.

Either you can upload a video that you have already shot or you can start shooting it though the app, and cut it and then use Viddy’s production packages. There are six production packages where you can add fancy features such as visual effects, graphics, color correction and audio. The app’s basic layout is almost similar to Instagram, with the bottom bar containing the same controls in the same order (Feed, Share, News, Activity, Profile etc).

Once you’re done with the package, you can add a title, location and tags, and share the video on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Apart from sharing your own videos, users also have a feed of other’s activities and they can even comment on posts they like. They also have an option to see which videos are most trending.

What appeals me the most in this app is its easy-to-use interface as users will certainly feel the ease with which they can use its video editing software.

Viddy is currently available only on the iPhone, but the company says they have plans for expanding to platforms like iPad which will include even deeper editing abilities.

Founded by JJ Aguhob and Brett O’Brien, Viddy has garnered $1.6 million in funding from Battery Ventures, Bessemer Ventures and Qualcomm. According to owners the app has seen a lot of activities, averaging between 12,000 and 15,000 downloads a day.
