Aimed specifically for iPad and iPhone users, hard disk giant Seagate has unveiled the GoFlex Satellite, an external/portable hard drive with a built-in battery that can connect to tablets and other devices via WiFi.
The external hard drive gives you store capacity of 500 GB for your iOS, Android or any device that has Wi-Fi capabilities. Thus you can carry an entire library of video, music, pictures and documents with you.
The external hard drive includes an iOS app for the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch that lets you browse and view multimedia files stored on the drive. With it you can stream video and audio content to three different mobile devices at once. The Android app will be available this summer. Android users can access content on a GoFlex Satellite device through its web browser.
Seagate promises a standby battery life of up to 25 hours, or 4 hours of continuously streaming video. GoFlex Satellite is available for preorder from Seagate.com, Amazon and BestBuy.com for $199.99, and is scheduled to arrive in Best Buy stores in July 2011.
"With the growth of the tablet and iPad markets and the larger volumes of high-quality media now being consumed, there is a clear need for access to content that is not plagued with the challenges of streamed video over the Internet," said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general manager of Seagate's retail group. "The unfortunate fact is that these popular new mobile devices are hampered by their limited storage capacity while one of their primary functions is that of media consumption.
This external hard disk is great news for those who sometime thought that buying a 16GB iPad instead of 32GB or 64GB was not a good option.
