Eager to boost Wii sales, Nintendo has slashed its prices to $149, from $169 for a bundle, and including a Mario game in the bundle.
The new $149.99 Wii package, which will include a white or black Nintendo Wii, a Wii remote and a copy of Mario Kart and a Wii Wheel accessory, will go on sale on May 15.
"From the day it launched, Wii has let players of all ages and experience levels have fun with one another," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "The new suggested retail pricing for both the hardware and select games will help create more of these magical moments for even greater numbers of people."
On the same day the company is also launching the new Nintendo Selects collection of Wii games, a set of popular games that millions of people have already experienced, at $19.99. These four games are: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Mario Super Sluggers and Wii Sports.
Nintendo has sold over 10 million copies of its top Wii game, Mario Kart. Wii is among the top-selling video game systems with the company having sold over 86 million Wii consoles.
Nintendo hopes to sell 13 million Wiis this fiscal. "From our perspective, there are literally millions of consumers getting into the video-game-playing age," Fils-Aime says. "And there's no better system for those entry consumers than the Wii."
The timing chosen by the company to sell the discounted console is right given the summer time is approaching and families will rush for its purchase.
