It is official: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has launched their tablet PlayBook in the Indian market costing Rs 32,000 (for a 16 GB variant). RIM believes that PlayBook’s entry may give hope to those who think that tablets start and end with Apple’s iPad.

The slate will be available in three different models with capacities of 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB, costing Rs 27,990, Rs 32,990 and Rs 37,990 respectively.

RIM said the gadget is distributed by Redington India and Ingram Micro, and will be available in 1000 retail stores across eight cities in the country.

The 7-inch tablet from BlackBerry runs on a new operating system built by QNX Software Systems and has good build quality and looks like a notebook from the front. It has 1GHz dual core processor with symmetrical dual-core processing and 1 GB RAM. Users can connect to Internet through a Wi-Fi network or by synchronising the device to their BlackBerry smartphones. The tablet weighs a meager 400 grams or 0.09 lbs and has a built-in micro USB connecter.

The device has got support for Adobe's Flash 10.3 player as well as AIR 2.7 which means it is ideal for games, apps and media.

The PlayBook comes with a 3 MP high definition forward facing camera and a 5 MP high definition rear-facing camera. It also has Codec support for media playback, video calling and creation.

Analysts believe the tablet market is India is still niche but is growing rapidly and the launch the RIM’s tablet will help in growing the overall computer tablet market. They say PlayBook will serve particularly well the business users. One of the biggest advantages will be its multi-tasking capability as iPad still struggles with it – just what mobile professionals need.
