Olympics chiefs approve Twitter use at London 2012

The International Olympic Committee has given green signal to athelets to tweet and blog from the London 2012 Olympics, but they could face expulsion for posting "vulgar or obscene words or images” and should restrict their blogging to first-person diary entries and shouldn’t report on events in the manner of journalists.

Athletes could also face a ban if they were found tweeting for commercial purposes.

Athletes are allowed to upload photos to social media sites – a practice which was mostly banned in Beijing in 2008 – but will not be allowed to sell or distribute them for other purposes.

Athletes can’t broadcast videos and audios taken inside Olympic venues but they may post videos taken elsewhere.

Moreover, athletes can’t use the official Olympics symbol and even Internet domain names and URLs including the word "Olympic" or "Olympics" are not allowed, unless approved by the IOC.
