Spanish police say they have arrested three suspected computer hackers who allegedly belonged to an international activist group that was responsible for attack on corporate and government websites around the world as well as recent cyberattacks on Sony’s PlayStation Network.
A Police statement said the three detainees have been identified as leaders of the Spanish section of a group that calls itself “Anonymous.”
Police said a computer server in one of their homes was used to carry out the cyber attacks. The Police said the same computer was also used in cyber-attacks against two Spanish banks, BBVA and Bankia, the Italian energy company Enel, as well as government sites in Spain, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Iran, Chile, Colombia and New Zealand.
Apart from Spain, the only two other countries to act against “Anynymous” are the UK and US.
However, it was not clear if the group had been the sole perpetrator of the recent attacks on Sony.
“Anynymous” was also originally thought to have been behind the attacks on Sony websites and services around the world, which left millions of user accounts exposed and Playstation Network services down for several weeks. However, a separate hacker collective called Lulz Security took responsibility on attacks on Sony servers.
