It was a fabulous final week of 2011 in terms of app downloads, noted an analysis by mobile research firm Flurry.

Enthusiastic consumers downloaded more than 1 billion apps for the first time in history for a given week.

Between December 24 and December 31, 1.2 billion mobile application activations occurred on Android and iOS devices, with 242 million of those happening just on Christmas day. The survey suggested that the record breaking haul was because of flurry of new smartphone and tablet buys and consumers rushing to purchase apps to spent good time during the festive season.

The report revealed that the number one country in terms of app download was the US which saw 509 million app downloads (42.3 per cent), followed by China, with 99 million app downloads, and the UK, with 81 million app downloads.

In a note, Flurry said that it believes that the one billion download record per week will become a common event. During CES 2012 and Mobile World Congress 2012, a lot of new devices are expected to be announced which will add to growing consumer tablet market category.

No only apps, Flurry said 20 million iOS and Android devices were active during the same period, with 6.8 million activations on Christmas day.
