Nissan tests self-healing iPhone cases

By: Aseem Gaurav on  January 17, 2012

What happens when a carmaker wants to build a sturdy iPhone case that will not only be sturdy but have the power to heal itself. That’s exactly what Nissan did when it launched the company’s new Scratch Shield case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

Built from ABS plastic, it is a rigid, robust and good looking case. It is made from Scratch Shield paint technology which the company claims to be the world’s first paint technology that allows fine scratches to mend themselves. It is the same paint that Nissan and Infiniti automobiles use in their cars around the world.

Here’s how this technology works: When the coating is damaged through scratches, it automatically fills the gap created and gets back in its original form. For lesser damages, the healing process can take as little as an hour, but for larger blemishes it may take even longer. The technology is currently being beta tested in Europe, but also licensed to NTT Docomo for use on mobile phones. Consumers can expect the case later this year if Nissan gets satisfied with the results from the beta test.
