Adobe releases photograph-editing app for iPad 2

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 27, 2012

Adobe Systems Incorporated has officially unveiled its new photo editing app for the iPad 2 – Adobe Photoshop Touch for iPad 2, via the iTunes App Store for $9.99. The company announced it at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2012.

Adobe's thoughtful migration of the popular software to the iPad would provide users a powerful tool that has been designed to deliver beautiful artwork effortlessly.

The new pare down version of app offers core Photoshop features, thus giving users the ability to combine multiple photos into layered images, make edits and apply effects to create artwork, touch up photos, paint, etc. It introduces users the mechanics of multilayered Adobe Photoshop and offers tools like a subset of the Photoshop toolbar, with paint, clone, magic wand, blur, heal, lasso and marquee among options.

The interface of the app is a lot similar to the like you'd find in the desktop version, but perhaps it is less intimidating and more intuitive. For instance, Scribble Selection Tool allows you to scribble over portions of the image that you want to keep and then scribble on the portions that you would like to remove. Moreover, users can also touchup photos, create new layouts and paint over them.

Since the Google Image Search is integrated into the app, the users will find it easy for image acquisition. They can easily learn from step-by-step tutorials and print wirelessly via AirPrint, share via Facebook, and upload work to Adobe Creative Cloud.

The app has been available on the Android market since last November.

Rough Guide To Buying A Desktop PC

For persons interested in purchasing a Desktop PC, there are many options, since desktops have many components. A person can choose to either buy a PC package from a PC retailer, or purchase individual components to get a more personalized PC. The latter option is particularly suited for persons who are on a Low end Budget, but do not want a low-powered, all-round PC. There are many Organizations that manufacture and sell Desktop PCs, of which  Hewlett Packard (HP) pc is the best. They offer potential customers with a wide range of expertly made PC systems, and classify each PC into categories to help persons choose the PC they would like to buy.

When buying a Desktop or purchasing parts to compile one, the important components that a customer should keep in mind are:
CPU (Central Processing Unit) – It is important to take very much consideration when buying a Processor, as it is basically the brain of your PC. Older chips, such as the Sempron, Athlon and Pentium 4s have become obsolete, so it is important to research on the newer Processing Units, such as the AMD Phenom, or the Intel i7.

Motherboard – This is the chip that basically houses all of the components, and every chip and peripheral device is connected to this Silicon board. Most motherboards will be fine, but if you really want a top notch motherboard, I would recommend the company Micro Star International (MSI) or Gigabyte, especially to gamers.

Hard Disk – A person needs to express their preference, be it to have a large space to store information in, or to save some bucks and practice a minimalistic PC usage. Persons who use their PCs for entertainment will need a larger amount of hard disk space, while a person who casually surfs the net can afford to have fewer gigabytes of space.

Optical Drives (CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray) – Since many PCs today come with an integrated DVD player and burner, it will not be a problem for the casual user. But persons who want to experience a fully entertaining multimedia package may opt for Blu-ray technology.

Video Cards – Many persons can suffice using the integrated graphics in a desktop PC, but for persons who wish to game and to entertain, higher performance video cards are needed. I would recommend a Direct X 11 card with about 1 gigabyte of memory for these persons.

Monitors – Last but not least, the monitor is a very important choice, especially for persons who want to see what they are doing on their PC. There are two main options, CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and LCD (Liquid Chrystal Display). LCDs are preferred because of the small size and energy footprint, but the price is very high compared to CRT. This is why persons on a budget would prefer to buy a CRT over a LCD monitor.
If you are building a PC by yourself, I would personally recommend to the Newegg Company to purchase parts, but for an assembly line PC, I would recommend Lenovo and Gateway.

Win $10K by downloading 25 billionth App Store app

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 19, 2012

Apple’s App Store is moving towards a milestone that is hard to beat and is marvelous by all measures. The store is about to hit 25 billion downloads and to celebrate this occasion, the Cupertino-California based company is giving away $10,000 iTunes gift card to the lucky winner who’ll hit it at the right moment.

Apple unveiled the store in July 2008 and just within a two and a half years span, more than 10 billion applications have been downloaded by the users, but now it has reached this mark within much less time. The company has launched a worldwide promotional page to celebrate the event which said:

“As of today, nearly 25 billion apps have been downloaded worldwide. Which is almost as amazing as the apps themselves. So we want to say thanks. Download the 25 billionth app, and you could win a US$10,000 App Store Gift Card.* Just visit the App Store and download your best app yet.”

The person who’ll submit an alternate entry form immediately after the 24,999,999,999th app download will be announced the winner. This is not the first time that the company is going with such a promotional event as even in 2009 it awarded a person who downloaded the one billionth app.

To become eligible there is even no need to download anything, as you can fill out an entry form, or even enter by phone. There are a maximum of 25 entries per person, per iTunes account or email address. Check out the Official Rules for full details.

Tablet sales to surpass PCs: Apple's Tim Cook

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 15, 2012

In a rare appearance before investors, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said the iPad has made Apple the most valuable company in the world and has significantly boosted its profits. Cook believes there are ''jaw-dropping'' opportunities ahead in the smartphone market.

Cook also said that the iPad tablet trajectory was "off the charts" and that the tablet market will surpass the units sales of the PC market.

As per current estimates, there are nearly 55 million iPads in the hands of consumers since the product made its debut, besides 170,000 iPad-optimised apps.

Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs last August, urged investors to be a patient about the company's cash reserves. He was speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology Conference.

Apple, which enjoys a cult following for its pioneering devices and groundbreaking design, is undoubtedly one of the most watched companies in the world.

A recent report by analyst firm Telsyte recognizes the growing presence of tablet among consumers which it says will cannibalise a significant portions of the PC computing devices.

Coming down heavily on competitors, Cook said the market is now filled with lots of tablets and smartphones but the gap has significantly widened between the iPad and other tablets.

As per latest rumours, Apple is believed to release the iPad 3 next month on March 7.

Wow, US Army to order 18,000 iPads!

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 12, 2012

In order to save space and cut down on the amount of paper charts and manuals its pilots and flight crews carry, the US Air Force plans to buy up to 18,000 iPads or similar tablets. The move follows the decision of various commercial airlines adopting the dominant iPad tablet.

Apple’s popular tablet was named in a notice on a government procurement website.  The armed service also said it would also consider other names such as include Research In Motion’s PlayBook or Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. The procurement could range between 63 and 18,000.

According to the US army, the tablets would be used as electronic flight bags for flight crew members in place of space consuming manuals and navigation charts used by pilots.

Analyst feels that the purchase decision would give a big boost to the Cupertino-based company’s attempt to infiltrate the government sector. Apple has been eating away RIM’s market share in the US government market.

The Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are already using Apple products.

Vonage releases mobile app to compete with Skype; offers ultra low-cost calling and texts

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 9, 2012

Making a glorious return in the mobile app ecosystem, Vonage - a low-cost Internet phone provider that enables users to make phone calls using their broadband connection - has rolled out Vonage Mobile, new iPhone and Android apps, that allow for texts and calls.

Vonage claims that it is now offering per-minute voice prices that are 30 per cent less (for the 50 most called countries) than Microsoft’s VoIP service, and 70 per cent less than traditional mobile carriers.

A viable solution for people talking with friends and family overseas, the app works with Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G wireless data networks. To make calls, users can add credit from their app, through iTunes or Android Market, in increments of $4.99 and $9.99. The app automatically takes names from the directory list so you don't have to import them. If you are an existing Vonage customer, then using the app will bring additional benefits to you, like it makes calls to any Vonage home or business lines as free. This isn't Vonage's first foray into mobile apps — the company has an "Extensions" app for its home phone users which allows them to use their international calls anywhere.

“Vonage Mobile consolidates the best features of our prior applications, while adding important functionality, better value and improved ease of use. It combines the best of free high-def voice and messaging along with incredible value for traditional international calls, all while using the existing mobile number and address book for unsurpassed ease of use," said ” said Marc Lefar, CEO of Vonage, in a statement.

According to Vonage, one can call to any phone in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico from anywhere in the world will be free for a limited time.

Although the app consume a lot of space in terms on installation, you'll find the call quality at par with a standard landline. U.S. consumers roaming overseas can use the app, for which they'll have to pay roaming data charges.

Avid launches video editing app for iPad

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 8, 2012

Avid Studio, a heavyweight in the digital media-editing software world, with industry standard pro brands like Media Composer and Pro Tools, has released a video-editing app for the highly popular tablet iPad. The $4.99 app offers various 'prosumer' features that are associated with the desktop suite and hopes that iPad owners will use it in collaboration with the full suite for Mac and PC.

The app, which gives users an alternative to Apple's iMovie software, will enable users to arrange and fine-tune clips with frame-by-frame edits.

It works with all kinds of media, be it video, photo and/or music. Users can either the media from the iPad itself, or from an external device.

Users can swiftly arrange clips in the Storyboard, make edits using the Timeline, and add transitions, effects, and a soundtrack. They can then share movies directly to YouTube, Facebook, and more – or export your project to Avid Studio for the PC and continue editing with even more advanced tools.

Avid says the app offers the best features of film-editing technology which helps the users to swiftly arrange the clips in the Storyboard, perform precision editing using the Timeline feature. It also offers a host of effects and transitions that can be dragged onto clips besides adding the soundtrack. The finished clip can then be shared directly to YouTube, Facebook, or directly upload your video to Avid on your PC for more editing.

Some of the pretty amazing things that you can do with this app include: creating multi-layer 3D animations, transitions, and titles with included Montage templates. It's easy to create picture-with-picture effects using the app besides titles using text.

Avid feels the app is in response to how people are now suing the tablets to make things rather than just consume. Although there are all sorts of video editing apps available in the market, Avid offers the advantage of its integration with the desktop software.

Apple pips Samsung to become top smartphone vendor

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 7, 2012

Cupertino, California-based Apple has regained the lead in global smartphone shipments from Samsung Electronics last quarter after starting sales of the latest version of the iPhone, the data from research firm IDC suggested.

Apple shipped 37 million smartphones in the three months ended December 31, giving it a worldwide market share of 23.9 per cent, much higher than 15.9 percent share recorded a year earlier. In the same period, South Korean handset maker reported shipments of 36.5 million units.

Apple took the lead in the smartphone market in the fourth quarter due to the introduction of iPhone 4S in October, IDC said. But despite coming at the second spot, Samsung reported the highest (275 per cent growth) among all the top five vendors. One major reason for the Korean handset maker’s high marketshare was due to its expansion of Galaxy range of phones, with high-end handsets including the Galaxy S II and the Nexus, and more mass-market products, such as the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Y.

But, in the same breath, Apple’s growth of 128 per cent on year-on-year basis, was nothing short of impressive.

On the other hand, both Nokia and Research In Motion saw their market shares drop for the quarter. Finnish mobile phone maker, Nokia, reported the highest year-over-year decrease among the top vendors, seeing a drop of 12.4 per cent from 27.6 per cent. That was largely due to the falling demand for its Symbian phones, but its smartphone strategy took another step forward with the release of new Lumia Windows Phone.

The troubled Canadian smartphone maker Research in Motion RIM had its share of ups and downs. Overall, it was a mixed bag for the company with its new BB OS 7-powered BlackBerry smartphones reaching additional markets.

Further, HTC saw its market share dip to 6.5 per cent from 8.5 per cent a year ago, though its shipments inched up to 10.2 million.

Overall, IDC figures suggest that the smartphone posted a healthy growth of 61.3 per cent between 2010 and 2012.

A ‘tasteless’ Steve Jobs ad in Taiwan draws ire of Apple fans

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 6, 2012

Apple fanboys and fangirls were treated to a tasteless ad as a Steve Jobs look-alike angel complete with white wings and a halo was shown in a Taiwanese television commercial.

The 20-second ad for the Action Electronics Action Pad tablet PC, which uses Google’s Android operating system, featured a local Taiwanese comedian A-Ken, has been widely criticized for being “tastless,” “shameless,” and derogatory to a man of Steve Jobs’ stature. A-ken was dressed in Jobs’ trademark black turtleneck sweater and blue jeans.

The commercial begins with A-Ken saying: “I’d like to present to you a new generation of tablets. It's amazing. I finally have another Pad to play with."

Immediately following the ad, strong opposing voices were heard here in the United States.

Steve jobs, the iconic creator of all things Apple – the iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes – was recently named as the second 'greatest innovator of all time' in the annual Lemelson-MIT Innovation Index, behind the inventor of the first practical electric light bulb -- Thomas Edison.

Longtime users show no 'Facebook fatigue': Survey

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 3, 2012

The more you use it, the more you love it. Using Facebook just doesn't get boring for most of us. This was revealed in the Pew Research Center report, based on a U.S. phone survey, logs and data from November 2010, which surveyed people who have been using the popular social media site since it was founded in 2004.

The survey showed that people just love more messages, more "likes" and more comments. Yes, even more "pokes." This also explains the social networking site's possible long-term popularity as it heads for a $5 billion initial public offering.

The Pew research suggests that the worries of people developing "Facebook fatigue" may be unfounded.

"The more Facebook friends users have, the more involved they will be with the social networking site. They'll perform every activity like friending, liking, private messages, commenting, posting, photo tagging, joining groups and poking," Pew said regarding the survey by its Internet & American Life project.

On an average Facebook users can grow their circle of friends to 156,569 people through a network of friends of friends.

Setting eye on all two billion Internet users, Facebook has so far captured 845 million of them. In its SEC filing for an initial public offering, Facebook said, "The size of our user base and our users' level of engagement are critical to our success. We aim to connect all of them."

Now, charge your iPad 2 without even connecting to wires

By: Aseem Gaurav on February 1, 2012

Thanks to inductive charging technology, showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, Apple's immensly popular tablet iPad 2 can now be charged without the need of connecting it to wires.

The system is called LaunchPort and it uses the same technology which is used in production of an electric current across a conductor moving through a magnetic field.

After connecting the system, owners of iPad 2 need to place the tablet into a specially designed sleeve called a PowerShuttle that is placed on a tabletop BaseStation or WallStation.  As you mount your iPad, the system begins the charging process without the use of any wires.

Not only does the charging system improves the aesthetics of the place, it even allows users to rotate the tablet 360 degrees, thus, making the system more comfortable to use.

The sleeve even has its own speakers that boosts the sound system of the tablet. The sleeve's magnets even let you stick your iPad onto a refrigerator or work bench, thus offering you a wide range of space to operate upon.

A powerful idea indeed. However, owning such a sleek-looking system comes at a cost which is $350.
