Facebook planning to launch its own smartphone with ex-Apple engineers: Reports

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 28, 2012

The tech blogsphere is abuzz with reports of social networking giant Facebook planning to launch its own smartphone by next year. Facebook, which became a publicly traded company on May 18, is in no mood to miss the opportunity to enter the mobile phone arena with a big bang.

A report on Sunday by The New York Times suggest that it has already employed over half a dozen Apple software and hardware engineers who have experience on the iPhone and iPad.

This would be the company’ third effort at building a smartphone, as earlier the plan didn’t work out as per the expectations given the difficulties involved in the project. But apparently Facebook has now realized that in order to make it big in this industry, it will need some industry-veterans who would develop the hardware, specially Apple alumni.

The project surely makes sense for the newly public company, which now needs to find new sources of revenue. The company in its IPO filing with the SEC earlier stated that the growth in the number of users accessing the social network from mobile devices actually poses a risk to its revenue model, which is heavily dependent on advertising.

“We do not currently directly generate any meaningful revenue from the use of Facebook mobile products, and our ability to do so successfully is unproven. Accordingly, if we are unable to successfully implement monetization strategies for our mobile users, our revenue and financial results may be negatively affected,” the company had said.

The New York Times further reports that Facebook neither denies nor confirms about the news, but emphasized on its earlier statement that it would be "working across the entire mobile industry" including with hardware manufacturers, operators, OS providers and app developers.

Things seem to be going pretty fine for the company, which recently announced the launch of its own app store. It said the App Center will soon offer apps to be placed exclusively in Facebook’s store. Thus, in the current scenario, Facebook looks to be well positioned to enter the smartphone market.

However, one needs to remember that earlier many consumer electronics giants have burned their fingers in entering this arena like: Hewlett-Packard, Dell and even Sony has not done extremely well.

Facebook launches camera app for iPhone users‎ with Instagram-like filters

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 27, 2012

In a little over a month after Facebook bought photo-sharing app Instagram for close to billion dollars, the newly-public social network has released its own and similar mobile photo app called Facebook Camera. The app offers all the basic features of a photo editing app like cropping, editing and adding a range of speciality filters and sharing multiple photos. It also allows users to view a feed of friends’ photos and comment on them.

However, the app’s release raises questions about the recent purchase of photo sharing app Instagram. One doubts what prompted the social networking company to buy Instagram when it has to release its own very similar app. Experts view it as the company’s ongoing plans to dominate the photo sharing space in the mobile world.

Every day, people from all across the globe add more than 100 million tags to photos on Facebook. These images are all about ‘moments’ and whatever you come across in everyday life. By launching the app the company now wants to make it as a one stop-shop for all the consumer needs – be it uploading or sharing photographs.

The app’s working is simple: On opening the app, it presents a user interface that is fast and pretty easy to use. The app allows Facebook users to view a feed that concentrates only on images. "Upon launching the app, you'll see a feed of just great photos from the people you care about," the company said. Of course, the user can swipe to view more of any album or tap to enlarge a particular image.

To share your photos, there is a camera button on the top left corner, flanked by a few photos that you recently took. Just below it you’ll find a news feed that comprises of only photos your friends have uploaded. To post one of your photos, just tap a photo to view it full screen, crop, rotate, tag and then apply any of the fifteen filters – which are strikingly similar to Instagram. A blue icon at the bottom right corner of the screen is meant for adding caption and then you can post the photos. It even allows users to attach multiple photos to a post.

Similarly, you can comment on photos that your friends have taken, tag them, and also Like photos. However, you can’t save the photos which you have liked in others’ feed.

As for the Instagram fans, the current addition would not mean an end to it, as the company says it is committed to building and growing Instagram independently.

This is the fourth app addition by Facebook and though the company is saying the move is intended to enhance the Facebook photo experience, it could well be a part of its strategy to stay ahead in the mobile wars.

Zuckerberg posted his marriage picture on Facebook dressed in a simple dark blue suit, white shirt and wearing a tie. On ther other hand, Chan was dressed in an elegant sleeveless laced white wedding gown with a veil falling over her shoulders.

Like Zuckerberg, Chan also updated her relationship status with the message "Married to Mark Zuckerberg". And just within hours of posting, the picture got over 368,000 likes.

Google Search gets smarter, incorporates 'knowledge graph' to think like a user

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 17, 2012

Google will soon introduce a new tool, which has been designed to make its search engine smarter.

The new redesign will include a new search process called "knowledge graph" – which will deliver context-sensitive information about the searched keyword – displayed in boxes to the right of the main search results.

Pls click on the image to enlarge

In other words, the new feature will simplify the search queries of the users, especially those which are ambiguous, to indicate what exactly they intend to know about.

For instance, a user searching for ‘Taj Mahal’ might be asked to choose between the monument, a musician, an Indian restaurant or a casino. The new search tool will bring up a range of options in the right-hand sidebar, to help users provide the answer as quickly and concisely as possible.

Also, say you have searched for The White Tiger, the debut novel by Aravind Adiga, which won the prestigious Man Booker Prize, the knowledge graph will also show three other books that had won the same prize and one that won the Pulitzer.

“The redesign, which for now affects only U.S.-based English language users, will be extended to a wider audience,” said Amit Singhal, vice president of engineering at Google and the head of search. He added the results will contain graphical elements, such as maps and pictures of related results, in separate pop-ups.

Earlier, this week, the Internet search giant said its knowledge base has grown to 500 million entities at present, with 3.5 billion attributes of and connections between those entities. According to comScore, Google holds numero uno position in the US market, occupying a massive 66 per cent share. However, many see it as an attempt to thwart any competition from sites like Facebook. Interestingly, Google’s knowledge graph release will come just a week after Microsoft Corp.’s Bing, announced an overhaul that will highlight more information taken from Facebook.

The biggest advantage that a user will get as a result of this new tool is that they don’t have to leave Google’s pages, as earlier one has to go to a site like Wikipedia to search for the information. Further, this will also result in more traffic generated to Wikipedia, as it will be prominently linked to in the summary boxes.

According to Singhal, “the new tool will give you a more complete picture of your interest, provide smarter search results, and pique your curiosity on new topics.”

Do send in your comments about what you think about this new tool.

LinkedIn launches a ‘sophisticated’ app for Windows Phone

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 16, 2012

Just after releasing its iPad app last month, business networking site LinkedIn has quietly launched a 'sophisticated' LinkedIn app for Windows Phone. The company calls it a treat for Windows Phone users as it says the new app is sleek and includes more features than Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.

The app allows users to receive updates from their current connections, update profile, the latest LinkedIn news, groups you follow and your inbox. The LinkedIn app seems to offer quite a different experience from other OS, since it takes advantage of platform’s Metro UI and Live tiles.

According to the company, it has added two new sections: jobs and companies which are exclusive to Windows Phone. Thus, users can browse for jobs that are relevant and save them for viewing it later. However, they will not be able to actually apply to jobs through the app, as for that they need to go onto the browser-based site for that. Further, users can follow news and updates from specific companies.

It is a visually appealing app that offers easy navigation. The app offers pretty much speedy experience as an animated tile makes it much more convenient to view the content.

LinkedIn is a highly popular and effective job search tool that helps in research, networking and marketing oneself. And through this app, the company has taken a right step in the direction of making it more popular among the discerning users.

New HP Notebook Is Hearty Helping of Fast and Cheap

There's so much to like in HP's new Pavilion dm3 that it's hard to know where to start. Perhaps with the looks: The aluminum and magnesium case looks cool, totally modern, and though it's got some plastic components (most notably the underside), it feels quite durable. The Mac-style keyboard is spacious and comfortable, even though the unit's got a 13.3-inch screen to keep things portable and svelte.
But looks aren't everything. Outfitted with a poky 1.3-GHz Core 2 Duo microchip, the dm3 doesn't win any benchmark contests, but performance is at least acceptable, somewhat bogged down only by HP's add-on dock software that does nothing but get in the way. The machine could use more than the 2 GB of RAM it includes, but the 500-GB hard drive is generous and the screen quality (1366 x 768 pixel resolution) is good.
But the dm3 really earns its stripes with top-notch life of the battery such as Hp PB991A battery. With well over five hours of running time under load, it runs circles around other machines in this class — and all without the eyesore of a mammoth battery pack jutting from the bottom or out the back of the laptop.

If there's one serious failure on this notebook it's the touchpad. While the multitouch features are appreciated, the material the pad is made from is decidedly not. Under the fingers of this reviewer, the glasslike pad exhibited a strong, tacky grip, causing fingertips to stick to it under even the lightest of pressure. It's not just hard to use this touchpad accurately; it's actually painful, as your fingers experience massively increased friction from the surface.

But all is not lost — especially for the cash-strapped. The price is just $815 as configured, so you'll have plenty of cash left over to afford a killer external mouse.

WIRED Slim, stylish and sturdy. Outstanding keyboard. Four USB ports (plus HDMI and an SD card slot) is a rarity in a machine this portable. Battery is graced with amazing life.
TIRED Awful, awful touchpad (it's an ongoing problem with HP Pavilion notebooks.) At 4.2 pounds, heavy for this category. Careful you don't step in the shovelware.

Polaroid launches Polamatic app for iOS to compete with Instagram and Hipstamatic

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 13, 2012

Everyone has, at one point, used or heard about Polaroid cameras: the magic of watching the film slide out and see what develops, and the iconic frame. That era or the style of taking pictures seems to be getting a new lease of life with the release of a new app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch called Polamatic.

The app perfectly bridges the gap between the old world and modern day era of smartphone by working in harmony to deliver the classic look of a Polaroid picture. Just like the Polaroid camera, the app will let your control the flash, front or rear camera, grid, timer and camera settings. All you need is just the tap of the button.

The app costs $0.99 and offers users 12 photo filters and 12 authentic frames. Although your can’t shake on the photos, it allows you to add your own custom text using 12 different fonts. After you choose the best combination of filters, frames and text, you can upload them directly to Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. Additional filters and frames are available as in-app purchases.

OMG! Angry Birds smashes 1 billion download mark

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 11, 2012

There's just no stopping the Angry Birds juggernaut. Rovio Mobile has every reason to rejoice as its Angry Birds title has crossed one billion download mark – making it one of the most successful app in the gaming world as of date.

The company said the achievement includes all the various Angry Birds titles, from the original through to Space. Just a reminder to our readers: only six months ago the title reached 500 million download mark and within 180 days the number of downloads have doubled.

To celebrate this achievement, Rovio has also announced a competition, which one can take part in by posting a message on Twitter using the hashtag #oneofthebillion. A random winner will get a "super limited and exclusive Mighty Eagle ring".

As we know the world’s population is seven billion, so it would mean that nearly “1/7th of the world’s population has downloaded Angry Birds.” It’s an amazing feat for the Finnish start-up which has been valued by analysts at over $9 billion - just short of that of struggling world No.2 phonemaker Nokia.

Rovio, which was on everyone’s lips not only due to its game but also due to it an extremely profitable company already last year. Rovio forecast a bumper year ahead as it plans to launch several more titles in 2012, including a non-Angry Birds title.

Angry Birds became a global phenomena after it was launched on iOS in December 2009. The franchise has thereafter expanded to Android, Windows Phone, Mac, Google Chrome and more. The original title now has several versions including Angry Birds Seasons, Rio and Space, besides a whole range of real-world products.

FreedomPop's 4G iPhone Sleeve goes on sale

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 11, 2012

Los Angeles-based FreedomPop, the 'Freemium' mobile broadband outfit, has started selling its first product online, a  WiMAX sleeve that fits over the iPhone 4 and 4S. However, as against the 1 GB of free monthly data it originally advertised, the company will now give a guaranteed 500 MB. WiMAx and 4G connections are known to deliver performance that is 15 times faster than the 3G services.

According to Mauricio Sastre, FreedomPop's VP of Product, the timing of the product launch couldn’t be better as other mobile carriers, AT&T and Verizon are raising the prices for broadband data plans, and consumers are looking for better alternatives.

The $99 case also promises to extend your iPhone’s battery life by upto six hours and enables users to share WiFi with upto eight devices simultaneously.

"We are one step closer to disrupting the wireless broadband internet market and providing all US citizens with access to free, fast, reliable wireless internet on the most popular mobile device in the world," emphasized Sastre. When ordering the device, the company guarantees that you will receive your sleeve “before the rest of the world.”

Are you a Facebook addict? A new test can tell you

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 8, 2012

Is Facebook simply a part of your weekly routine or do you find yourself aggressively involved in checking your feeds and updating posts? If you are not able to tell it easily, researchers from Norway have developed a new tool to measure it through the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS).

Doctor of Psychology Cecilie Schou Andreassen, who heads the research project Facebook Addiction at the University of Bergen (UiB) says the phenomenon is found more among the young users than older users. Gender-wise, women are more prone of developing Facebook addiction as compared to their male counterparts.

The study, first of its kind worldwide, involved 423 students, of which 227 were women and 196 men, found that Facebook was more used by those who are anxious and insecure, as compared to those who are not.

It said that people who are organized and more ambitious are less likely to develop Facebook addiction. They will use the popular medium for networking and other work.

The study further revealed that the symptoms of Facebook addiction are much similar to like alcohol addiction and drug addiction.

The study basically asked these six questions and asked the volunteers to answer them on the following scale: (1) Very rarely, (2) Rarely, (3) Sometimes, (4) Often, and (5) Very often:

You spend a lot of time thinking about Facebook or plan use of Facebook.

You feel an urge to use Facebook more and more.

You use Facebook in order to forget about personal problems.

You have tried to cut down on the use of Facebook without success.

You become restless or troubled if you are prohibited from using Facebook.

You use Facebook so much that it has had a negative impact on your job/studies.

Anwering four of the seven items with “often or “always” would mean that you are a Facebook addict.

Although the Bergen scale is the first to be scientifically validated, there are a lot of Facebook addiction tests available online.

Do send in your comments about how do you rate yourself in terms of Facebook addiction.

Apple upgrades iPad 2 with 30% better life

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 8, 2012

The iPad 2 is already a big hit and most of us using it are pretty much satisfied. But if you are planning to buy one, then Apple has good news for you. The company is quietly delivering upgrades to the hardware of the iPad 2.

Apple has upgraded the dual-core processor SoC from a 45nm fabrication to a 32nm fabrication process. This means that the tablet would be able to deliver more power. The new iPad 2 SoC will power the tablet for 30 percent longer while running games, 18 per cent while playing videos and 15 percent while using the iPad 2 to browse the web.

However, as reported by few tech sites, it is hard to identify that unless you crack open the shell and run some tests, so you have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on a slightly superior iPad 2.

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 6, 2012

Rovio, the Finnish computer game developer of the Angry Birds franchise, has announced that you can now play the game right in your Facebook Timeline.

The firm, in its blog, wrote that a new Share & Play feature allows anyone to embed Angry Birds levels on a Facebook Timeline, blog or a website. Sharing will allow Facebook to embed a tiny, playable version of that level right in your Timeline. Then you can invite your friends to play it and get addicted. With no extra installations, the game will be launched and played instantly from those locations.

The users can post their best scores for a particular level on friend’s Facebook Timeline and invite them to try to beat it. Although the mini-game loads on a small section on the Timeline, you can enlarge it to full-screen.

Logitech launches solar powered keyboard case for iPad: A green iPad accessory

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 6, 2012

Swiss peripherals company Logitech has attempted to integrate green into its peripheral devices and the result is the latest Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio, which works with the second and the third generation iPad as well. The new keyboard case harnesses the power of the sun and lamps to power its Bluetooth keyboard. Other than that, it performs the same functions like any other keyboard folio on the market with the ability to prop the screen at two different angles.

Logitech claims that once charged, the device’s internal battery will provide enough juice to operate the keyboard for two years (given that you use it for a maximum of two hours per day.) You can charge the Folio in both indoor and outdoor lighting environments, and there’s also an instant on/off feature, which wakes up the iPad when you open the folio. I hope you got the point.

The company has used black, soft-touch, faux leather to craft the case and has embossed it with a Logitech logo. The case offers two stand positions for different viewing angles. One is for typing and other for viewing movies and other multimedia.

The keyboard comes with 64 keys in US layout and measures 428 x 17.8 x 253 mm, and weighs 460 g without the iPad. At $129.99 , it can prove to be a smart partner for your precious iPad.

IPad, tablets to shape the market for apps: Report

By: Aseem Gaurav on May 4, 2012

According to a latest report by research2guidance, tablet users (of iPad and other tablets) will help shape the future mobile app market. The study looked at what the worldwide growth in mobile apps could mean for consumers and developers.

The study revealed that there has been an increase of 58 million in the number of new tablet app consumers, which now constitute 8.6 per cent of the installed app consumer base. Research2guidance expect the tablet app consumers to grow by more than 150 per cent by 2013. It says the growing number of tablet app downloading segment will influence the direction of the app market. Several studies have showed that tablet users show different behaviour towards app downloading/usage and mobile browsing than smartphone users.
Developers are now putting more focus on developing apps for the iPad and other tablets, as in 2011, the number of apps in the Apple App Store for iPad rose 180 per cent.

The report also highlights the fact that a larger number of people are taking their tablets, especially the iPad, at the workplace. This mean there is significant growth potential for apps being developed for enterprise tablet users.

Earlier, IDC has reported that the total worldwide tablet shipments have more than doubled to 17.4 million units in the first quarter. It said iPad has outmuscled its Android-powered tablet computer rivals in early 2012. While the shipments of the iPad dropped slightly during the first quarter, the company still managed to grow its global tablet market share to 68 per cent.
