Garmin provides another option to users disappointed with Apple's new maps

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 26, 2012

A lot of users have complained of Apple’s new maps app in terms of deficiencies and inaccuracies and many of them have started seeing somewhere else to get a full-featured and correct map app. Garmin U.S.A. app is one such app that through its newly updated version features urban guidance, panorama view 3D and Google Street View.

In a well-timed update, Garmin has added compatibility with iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, in hopes of attracting the disappointed users turned off by Apple Maps. In addition, Garmin comes with Google Street View support that shows exactly what is on the route at a street-level view.

In addition, the app offers users the option to purchase Urban Guidance in-app, which "considers public transportation options, such as subways, trams, busses and water taxis, when calculating pedestrian routes." It will cost users $2.99.

Moreover, Panaorama View gives users a true 3-D elevation views obtained from NASA height and terrain data to show users what lies ahead. It is available as a $9.99 in-app purchase.

Garmin U.S.A. is made for the iPhone/iPod touch but is compatible with the iPad. The app covers the United States, with the exception of Alaska.

Apple iPhone 5’s first week sales figure exceeds 5 million units

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 25, 2012

Apple has said it sold over 5 million iPhone 5 units in the three days since it hit stores. In comparison it is a lot better than the iPhone 4S' first three days last year.

Given that the demand is so high, some analysts have expressed worries about the company being able to meet the requirement.

However, Apple is sure that it will easily deliver the required numbers. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook had said the company is "working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

According to Apple, majority of iPhone 5 pre-orders have been shipped to customers and a lot will be sent in October.

Analysts believe that sales could have been much higher had there been no problems on the supply side. They are expecting the company to sell anywhere between 8 million to 10 million units in the fiscal fourth quarter ending in September.

The iPhone 5 has been one of Apple's most aggressive international rollouts to date. The phone will be available 31 countries on September 28 and in more than 100 countries by the end of the year.
Undoubtedly, higher sales numbers are crucial to boost the growth that transformed Apple into the world’s most valuable company.

They key question for Apple now is “Can they get them to as many people as they want in the right amount of time?”

Owners of iPhone 5 irked by scratches

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 24, 2012

The iPhone 5 has taken the world by storm. Be its pre-order sales, phenomenal buzz among the tech fraternity, media reporting, or unprecedented physical sales, the annual ritual of device’s launch has successful given the desired boost that the phone requires to do phenomenal in terms of sales. But the event isn’t without a surrounding air of controversy.

As complaints about the new Apple-created Maps feature in the new operating system iOS 6 started to pour in, a number of early users have claimed that the back case of the iPhone 5 is prone to scratching and gives more visible signs of wear and tear. Moreover, some have even reported of receiving devices that show cuts here and there right after opening the box.

According to users, the black version is more likely to receive damage than its white counterpart. It may be because of the contrast in colors.

However, there is no official comment from the tech giant on these issues.

A lot of users have also taken the issues over on Apple.com’s official customer-support message boards saying that they have exchanged their devices out for new iPhones at their local Apple store. Mroeover, the store executives have cautioned consumers to unbox the device inside the Apple stores to avoid extra headache.

The problem is occurring because the tech giant has switched to using aluminium structure for the iPhone 5.
And the process with which the device gets its color is through anodization (coating), which is not applicable to stainless steel. Hence this makes aluminium more scratch prone as compared to stainless steel.

You may wonder what to do if you find your iPhone with scratches. In the US, you can avail the facility of returning or replacing the handset if you are unsatisfied with it.

It is highly likely that Apple will soon resolve these cosmetic issues and you will get an iPhone that meets your expectation.

New iOS 6 clock: Swiss railway accuses Apple of ripping off clock design

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 21, 2012

The Swiss Federal Railway has claimed that the new clock icon within iOS 6 on the iPad (below left) violates the railway's clock trademark (below right).

This comes at a time when Apple is facing flak globally for a number of geographical errors and missing information. Apple Maps has replaced Google Maps, which is no longer available on iOS 6. A lot of users who downloaded the iOS 6, also took social media forums to vent their frustration.

The Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) said the clock design used by Apple is owned by the SSB and the Cupertino-based Apple has not the permission to use it.

As per reports, the SBB is looking for an “amicable agreement” with Apple to let the iPhone 5 maker use it in return for a particular amount of license fee.

Apple’s iOS 6 is out and is now running on lots of devices. It would be interesting to watch how Apple responds to this issue.

From Sydney to New York, Apple fans line up for iPhone 5 scramble

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 21, 2012

Apple’s iPhone 5 will hit stores around the globe on September 21 and Apple fanboys and fangirls have already formed long queues outside the company's real-world stores to get their hands on the new generation device.

Beginning last week, gadget lovers started a queue outside Apple's flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York. The same is the scene in Sydney, Japan and Singapore.

The iPhone 5 is turning out to be another commercial smash for the trend-setting US company, for which it has received over two million orders in the first 24 hours after it began pre-sales online on September 14.

Apple also said that iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal.

Such is the marketing value of the event that some companies even paid their staff in the hope of being photographed and interviewed for being among the first in the world to get their hands on the new gadget.

Moreover, there are some who are standing in the queue wearing promotional T-shirts and caps or carrying advertising materials.

For instance at a queue outside the Apple's flagship Covent Garden and Regent Street stores in London, two men being sponsored by a research consultancy will share their videos and a week-long experience to tell why the Apple brand attracts so much attention from fans.

In US, the iPhone 5 will be available at Apple retail outlets through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Best Buy, RadioShack, Target, Walmart stores and other resellers.

Apple confirms people ordered 2 million iPhone 5 on first day

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 17, 2012

Apple has confirmed that iPhone 5 preorders have surpassed the two million unit mark in the first 24 hours – twice the amount of preorders it received for the iPhone 4S.

The demand for the new iPhone clearly outstripped supply, which in turn forced the company to push back some orders from the original September 21 to two weeks, or September 28.

Despite such high demand, the company has said that “majority of pre-orders” will be delivered on the official launch date this Friday.

As reported earlier by iPadfanzz.blogspot.com, AT&T said that the new iPhone 5 is the fastest selling iPhone yet, surpassing Apple's previous iPhone sales records. The US carrier is expecting to begin shipping in 14 to 21 business days of all versions of the iPhone 5.

The huge popularity of the company’s new smartphone has also lifted Apple stock. The stock has already increased by over 70 per cent this year.

Analysts predict that Apple could ship between 9 million and 10 million units of the iPhone 5 by September 29, or the last day of [fiscal 2012].

AT&T says iPhone 5 is Apple’s fastest selling smartphone yet

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 17, 2012

Apple’s fifth generation iPhone is not only bigger, faster and lighter, but according to US mobile network AT&T it is also the fastest selling iPhone yet, surpassing Apple's previous iPhone sales records.

Although the carrier did not offer any numbers to support its claim, it said the pre-orders for the iPhone 5 have surpassed those of all previous models on the device’s first day of availability, and over the weekend as well.

"Customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend," the company said in a statement released on Monday.

However, not word has come out from Apple or its other carrier partners, Verizon and Sprint.

Meanwhile, queues are gathering outside various Apple Stores around the world. The new iPhone would go on sale on September 21. In the past too, Apple fanboys and fangirls have have queued for days, travelled thousands of miles and spent thousands of pound to be among the first to own Apple's newest products.

The physical sale is expected to see major rush by people who have been holding off upgrade.

Analysts are expecting the new iPhone sale to be a bestseller and it would be a major surprise if it didn't outsell the previous version.

According to J P Morgan, the sale of iPhone 5 is likely to add between a quarter and a half percentage point to fourth quarter annualised growth in the US.

Amidst much anticipation, Apple launched the much awaited iPhone 5 at its September 12 event in San Francisco. Built from aluminium and glass, the iPhone 5 weighs 112 gm and is 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S, and is the thinnest iPhone yet at 7.6mm thick. The new iPhone comes with iOS 6, Apple’s new mobile operating system, which includes Apple's own Maps app, an updated version of Siri and lots more.

    iPhone 5 specs:

    4-inch, 326ppi Retina display at 1136 x 640 pixels,
    GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, LTE and Wi-Fi
    GPS
    Bluetooth

    16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions

Yahoo CEO gives Apple's iPhone 5, other smartphones to Yahoo employees

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 17, 2012

Yahoo has moved away from the BlackBerry to Apple’s latest technology marvel, the iPhone 5, and other smartphones running on Android and Windows Phone 8.

The program, which is applicable only to Yahoo’s US employees, is called "Yahoo! Smart Phones, Smart Fun!" and under this the company will pay its employees' data and phone bills.

Under the program, Yahoo staff can chose from: the iPhone 5 (iOS), the Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android), the HTC EVO 4G LTE (Android), the HTC One X (Android) or the Nokia Lumia 920 (Windows Phone 8).

Yahoo! Chief Executive Marissa Mayer has reportedly sent an e-mail to all her full and part-time staff, saying Yahoo! wants its “employees to have devices similar to our users.”

The company will distribute the smartphones to its employees across 22 countries, which is likely to cost million of dollars.

Meantime, Yahoo! also said it will no longer provide IT support for the Blackberry phones.

Earlier this year, Mayer took charge of the top post of the company and one of her immediate decision was to give employees free lunch at the company’s café to boost morale.

iPhone 5 mania reaches Justin Bieber proportions, sells out in 1 hour

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 15, 2012

The new iPhone 5 is not only dubbed the best smartphone ever but also the best selling device. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 went live on September 14 night and, as expected they went like hotcakes.

As per reports, only one hour after pre-orders went live, Apple sold all its pre-order inventory, which is twenty times faster than iPhone 4 and 4S.

“I expected the new iPhone to be the biggest product release in consumer electronics history, but I think it has now become a mania,” said one analyst.

Such a huge demand also caused problems on the company’s website and many other wireless carriers’ sites, that showed error messages to those who tried to pre-order the new iPhone. Such an overwhelming demand has caused Apple to push their estimated shipping dates back, indicating a large volume of orders or limited supply of iPhones ready to ship next Friday, September 21.

On Friday, major online outlets had already moved their estimated shipping dates back, indicating a large volume of orders or limited supply of iPhones ready to ship next Friday, September 21.

In the US, it will take two to three weeks to ship the new iPhones pre-ordered online. Reports suggest that AT&T is likely to ship all version of the new phone in 14 to 21 business days.

It is a clear indication that the demand for new iPhone 5 is phenomenal. However, Apple and their outlets haven’t shared how many units have been pre-ordered.

iPhone 5: specs, price and pictures

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 13, 2012

The new iPhone 5 has probably got everything that you desire in a smartphone. It's a pinnacle of product design. Apple fanboys are in for a treat with a slimmer, thinner and taller iPhone with iOS 6, that too at the same price for iPhone 4S. It has got nothing that should disappoint you and probably offers the best choice when it comes to buying a sleek, powerful and a feature-packed phone. The iPhone 5 sports a larger 4-inch "retina" display with the ability to surf a high-speed 4G LTE network. It weighs 112 grams, or about 4 ounces, and is 20 per cent lighter than the previous iPhone 4S.

A significant boost has been given to its processor in form of the new A6 chipset that results in applications loading twice as fast, and graphics running smoother and photo capturing speed 40 per cent more than its predecessor.

The camera is spiffier. Both the front- and back-facing cameras have received upgrades in form of 720p and 1080p, respectively. Now users can take much larger photos thanks to the new Panorama feature. The iPhone 5 has improved video stabilization, and allows you to take still pictures simultaneously while you shoot video.

iPhone 5’s is now more alive than ever. It offers a longer battery life: 5 hours on standby and 8 whole hours while talking on the phone or surfing the web on 3G. It’s a 10 per cent overall.

Apple for the first time has include the 4G LTE in its iPhone. The new device will connect up with AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon's faster LTE data networks. It basically allows users to download data at much faster speed. Also, 4G compatibility is important for Apple to keep up with competitors such as Samsung.

The 30-pin dock connector that has come standard on every iPhone to date, is now a thing of past.  The company has launched an 80 per cent smaller connector they are calling Lightning that can be plugged into the phone in any direction, offers faster data transfer, and better durability.

The options for colours are black and white with a new, brushed metal back. It will be available for pre-order September 14th and in stores September 21st. The 16GB model will retail for $199, 32GB for $299, 64GB for $399.

Apple’s iPhone 5 is bigger, faster, lighter and has 4G

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 13, 2012

Apple has unveiled its thinnest, lightest, fastest, shinier and most powerful phone yet. It’s called iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 has probably got everything that a smartphone could possibly ask for. It has got the gravitational ‘pull” that may easily prompt the consumers to go for the purchase.

The new iPhone 5 is powered by Apple’s latest silicon creation -- A6 CPU -- that offers twice the processing speed and twice as fast graphics, as compared to its predecessor. Apple CEO Tim Cook promised that the pages will now load up to 2.1x times faster than before, while Keynote attachments will hit the screen 1.7x faster.

The iPhone 5’s camera, features the same 8 megapixel sensor as on the iPhone 4S, but will now have better low-light capabilities and a panorama mode. The device also comes with an upgraded front-facing camera, which now supports 720p video recording.

The iPhone 5 is lighter and faster -- though also taller -- than any of earlier models. It has a 4-inch screen with an 1136x640 resolution Retina display. It weighs 112 grams and is 7.6 mm thick. As compared to iPhone 4S - that's a half-inch bigger, 18 per cent thinner, and 20 per cent lighter.

"IPhone 5 is the best phone we've ever made," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for worldwide marketing, said as he introduced the device during a splashy invitation-only event in San Francisco.

As expected, the battery life of the device has got major improvement – the iPhone 5 now supports eight hours of 4G Web browsing, Apple said.

Also, as per the rumours -- the iPhone 5 has added speedy wireless 4G LTE support as well as dual channel HSDPA. For this, Apple will be working in the U.S. with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless, as well as several other carriers in Canada and overseas.

The phone also offers users to take 1080p HD video with improved video stabilization and allows you to click photos while you take video.

On the audio front, the device now has three microphones, including ones on the top in front and back, and a new one on the bottom. It also comes with an improved speaker and noise-cancellation on the earpiece in the phone itself. This basically means crystal-clear voice even when you are in traffic. Apple has includes new "wideband audio" technology to bolster sound by filling up more of the frequency spectrum.

Also, Apple has done away with the 30-pin connector, and now offers a new 8-signal all-digital cable that is 80 percent smaller and reversible. Aptly called Lighting, it's small and certainly more convenient.

Commenting on the phone’s screen, Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief, said it was expanded to make it more comfortable to hold in your hand and operate with your thumb. The device, like previous models, comes in two colors, black and white, with a silver back.

At the same time the company also announced that, iOS 6 will be a free upgrade for iPhones released since 2009 the 3GS, 4 and 4S models. It will also be available on last year's and this year's iPad models and newer iPod Touch devices. iOS 6 will ship with the iPhone 5 out on September 21 in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the U.K.

“Apple has never been stronger,” said Tim Cook at the end of the nearly two-hour event.

Moreover, adding to the consumer benefit, the new iPhone will cost the same as the 4S - $199, $299 and $399 for the 16GB, 22GB and 64GB devices, respectively, with new carrier contracts.

Pre-order sales start on September 14. Apple said the new phones would start to ship on September 21.

Undoubtedly, Apple has easily delivered a powerful, featured-packed and performance oriented smartphone – that will easily draw consumers in droves. Analysts are hoping that with this launch Apple will probably have a monster quarter during the all-important holiday shopping season.

Why Apple's iPhone 5 may not be just another smartphone

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 12, 2012

In the competitive landscape where more and more smartphones resemble each other in looks and performance, it becomes all the more important for the technology giant to produce something that can set them apart.

It is likely that Apple may have a surprise up its sleeve for us. As usual, the rumour mill has been grinding out a steady stream of speculation like a new design that will sport a larger screen. Apple is also expected to slim down the iPhone 5 by just mere millimeters while also making its design taller due to the device’s rumored screen size.

Rmuours suggest that the display will be at 4-inches with a 16:9 aspect ratio which will allow iPhone 5 owners to view content in a broadscreen. It is expected that Apple will upgrade the processor from the A5 chip to may be a new A6 chip or the same A5X chip found in the new third-generation iPad.

There’s also widwspread rumour that the new iPhone 5 will have global 4G LTE connectivity. If it becomes a reality then users of iPhone 5 will be able to download data at 10 times faster than normal 3G speeds. Cupertino-based Apple is already giving this feature in the third-generation iPad.

It is also rumored that the iPhone 5 will come with a new smaller dock connector that will replace the 30-pin dock connector found on previous iPhone models. The headphone socket is likely to move from the top of the phone to the bottom.

It is also likely that the new device will come with a battery capable of delivery up to 40 percent longer use times despite the fact that the phone will run on power-hogging 4G LTE.

Other possible inclusion may come in form of an improved camera update and a new tier-one carrier.

In addition to the new iPhone, Apple may also confirm the release of iOS 6, the latest version of its mobile operating system. The company announced this version at a WWDC event in San Francisco in June. The iOS 6 will introduce Apple's own maps, major upgrades to Siri, Facebook integration, new iPhone app features, iCloud tabs, Mail VIPs, Face Time over 3G, Photo Stream, Maps, Guided Access and a new app called Passbook, which collects virtual items such as gift cards and boarding passes into one app.

The iPhone contributes half of Apple’s revenue and the majority of its profit, so a lot will be riding on the possible success of the new iPhone. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicts that "if [September 21] is the actual ship date, Apple could sell 6 million to 10 million iPhone 5's in the final week of September barring supply issues."

Google releases its own iPhone YouTube app

By: Aseem Gaurav on September 12, 2012

The growing hostility between Apple and Google has resulted in Google coming out with its own iPhone application that will introduce more advertising and more videos on Apple's trend-setting devices.

As you are aware YouTube is being bumped from the menu of pre-installed apps on the next version of Apple's mobile operating system, titled iOS 6.

Moreover, the new iOS is also dumping Google's digital maps as its go-to source for directions.

In order to give its users the same experience which they are accustomed to, the search engine giant has redesigned the app to offer them such as showcase recommendations for YouTube users based on their past viewing habits. Browsing through channels you have subscribed to is done by swiping on the left side. Google has also offered several sharing options on Google, Twitter, Facebook and e-mail, and the app also allows you to save YouTube URLs to your clipboard.

Google also says that the app’s new search feature finds video faster than the pre-installed iOS app, including "official music videos."

The new YouTube app is also relevant to Google from monetary point of view, since it allows advertising to be shown with the clips. This feature was not allowed on the pre-installed YouTube app on iOS.

The restriction on ads also prevented many music videos from being shown in the iOS app because of copyright issues.

“Removing the advertising limitations will mean that users can now watch YouTube videos that already have been available on smartphones and tablet computers running on Google's Android software,” said the company.

The new YouTube app has been designed specifically for the iPhone, but it will work on the iPad, too.

Moreover, the users will continue to watch YouTube videos that always use to see through Web browsers that work on iOS, including Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome.

YouTube claims that in all users watch more than 1 billion clips per day. A comScore survey in March said users spent 424.6 minutes with Google video sites — which mostly means that they spent it with YouTube. The company is expected to see this number go ever higher since it has also been helping other produce original content to lure new audience.

Perhaps the most important thing for users to know, is that the addition of a subject-based search guide will allow them to search videos based on interests such as music, pets and animals or sports.

Google has also said that is working a YouTube app that will be optimized for the iPad, which should be available in the coming months.

    Printer Care Tips & Guides

Many modern printers are designed to print, scan, and fax as well. There are different types of printers that give specific output. Choosing an all-in-one printer can be quite impressive. But you won’t get the perfect result, unless you keep an eye on its maintenance. There’s no sense in having an expensive printer, if you properly don’t take care of it. An uncared printer tends to accumulate dust, gets its cartridges clogged, and results in staggered print outs. Proper maintenance can lengthen its life, usage, and lessen your printing load. Preserve your printer in a perfect condition to get the best quality print out, every time you print. This article outlines some vital tips and guides that will help you to prolong your printer’s life.

    Tips & Guides:-
    •  The price of our printer is more expensive than the cartridge. It’s always recommended to buy original cartridge, instead of buying refill ink which can hamper your machine. Use oil-based ink which is better than water-based materials. This is because the water-based ink dries up easily if the printer is used rarely. The original ink will produce a good quality print without damaging your printer.
    •  Leaving the printer idle for a long period of time is a bad sign for it. It will result in the interrupted flow of ink in the nozzle with a poor print quality. Print black and color documents 1-2 sheets periodically 2-3 times a week. This will ensure the smooth flow of ink.
    • Turn off the device when you are not using it. It will keep the closing holes of the flow of ink safe in the printer head. The printer head will not dry up by constant exposure to air. Turn off and cover it to prevent dust and other particles. It will also keep the machine functioning at high quality.
    • Unplug the printer before cleaning it. Clean it regularly from outside and inside. Use a damp, lint-free cloth dipped in water or rubbing alcohol to clean. Wipe away the dust and other contaminants deposited over and around the printer. Take off the hood and remove the cartridge before cleaning inside. Use rubbing alcohol or bestine to clean the roller. You can also use a small vacuum cleaner or keyboard vacuum to suck the dust and dirt.
    • Every printer comes with a diagnostic tool, usually contained in the printer maintenance menu. It’s a software help to overcome the printer problems. Check, learn, and use it to keep your machine healthy. Run commands like nozzle cleaning, print head alignment, cleaning rollers, etc.
    • After cleaning, use lubricant occasionally to experience smooth printing moment. Put the lubricant on the shaft, head, or cartridge to maintain a good condition. This way you can make your printer more durable with a maintained print quality.

Reportedly, the group said it has removed all personal details before posting the IDs online. At the same time, the group also decided to withhold over 12 million UDIDs, with details like user names, device names, notification tokens, cell phone numbers and addresses.

"Here are 1,000,001 Apple Devices UDIDs. The original file contained around 12,000,000 device details. However, we feel a million would be enough to release. We trimmed out other personal data as, full names, cell numbers, addresses, zipcodes, etc," the group posted this message.

Experts wonder how the FBI got access to over 12 million Apple UDIDs and the associated details.

However, the affected one million users can breathe a sigh of relief as their accounts are not in any danger of identity theft or account takeovers.

Unique device identifiers, or UDIDs, are a series of numbers and letters assigned to Apple devices running the iOS, such as iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads. Mobile app developers use these IDs to track Apple customers' use of mobile apps.

A software developer based in Florida has posted a tool at http://kimosabe.net/test.html to let you know whether your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch's UDID has been affected by hacking or not.
