London-based independent technology analyst Benedict Evans, has revealed statistics on Facebook's mobile usage, giving a picture of which platforms matter most for the social network.
As of September 2012, Facebook has 1.07 billion users, out of which 604 million are mobile. Out of them, 460 million access Facebook on mobile apps. That means only 134 million of Facebook's users are only accessing the site through desktop.
Out of various platforms, Apple is the most used for Facebook: 140 million iPhone users, 45 million iPad users. Android comes close at second with 175 million users — more than iPhone alone, and growing faster. RIM's BlackBerry platform had less than 60 million users.
The striking revelation that came up during the survey was that the mobile web usage was smaller than iPhone or Android usage.
What most interesting is how both of these platforms grew over the span of a year. Android has surpassed iOS in monthly active users (MAUs). Android had the biggest percentage of MAUs during the month with 16 per cent, followed by iOS with 13 per cent. That also means that those two apps alone accounted for over a quarter of Facebook's base.
