McDonald's nutrition info now in QR Code form

In its latest effort to help people make informed decision about their food, popular fast food chain McDonalds’s has started using the package redesign that uses the QR codes which provides consumers nutritional information about their food.

The redesign would be carried out by the company on all their carry-out bags and fountain beverage cups, communicating “brand stories” and delivering facts with a mix of illustration and texts.

"Our new packaging is designed to engage with customers in relevant ways and celebrate our brand," said Kevin Newell, McDonald's chief brand officer. "Customers tell us they want to know more about the food they are eating and we want to make that as easy as possible by putting this information right at their fingertips."

Before implementing the new design the company spoke to various people and took their inputs. It even consulted the Global Advisory Council, which emphasized the importance of providing access to nutritional information and support suing the packaging to connect consumers to facts about menu items.

McDonald’s effort is also an extension of the company’s 2006 effort, which resulted in nutritional data being placed directly on product packaging.

The QR codes are being distributed at more than 14,000 McDonald restaurants in the United States and will expand to international markets throughout this year.
