Zynga shuts down 11 Facebook games, including Petville, Mafia Wars

Social games publisher Zynga Inc has confirmed that it will be shutting down a number of online games in order to reduce spending and recover losses the company has suffered in 2012.

The plan will shut down, or remove, 11 games that the company currently offers. They include role-playing game "Mafia Wars 2," "Vampire Wars," "ForestVille" and "FishVille."

Zynga has suffered from financial decline in 2012, due to the reason that casual gamers are now moving towards from Facebook desktop games to mobile apps. Although it had launched a series of gaming apps on mobile app stores, it failed to repeat the same success it had enjoyed on Facebook. This also adversely affected Zynga’s stock price which went from around $10/share to just $2.33 where it currently stands today.

In other cost cutting measures, the company has already laid off 90 employees, shut down several smaller offices and is now removing games that it feels are not financially viable. Such games include:

Forestville: removed from app stores
Montopia: closed on December 21
Mojitomo: removed from app stores
Word Scramble Challenge: removed from app stores
PetVille: closed on December 30
Mafia Wars 2: closed on December 30
FishVille: closed on December 5
Vampire Wars: closed on December 5
Treasure Isle: closed on December 5
Indiana Jones Adventure World: will close on January 14
Mafia Wars Shakedown: removed from app stores

Two weeks ago, the San Francisco-based company announced the shutdown of "Petville" on its Facebook page. All the 11 shutdowns occurred in December.
