Sony has announced its Xperia Tablet Z – the slimmest and lightest 10.1 water resistant tablet at the Mobile World Congress. The tablet will launch globally in Q2 calendar 2013.

The design of Xperia Z fits with that of the Xperia Z smartphone. It uses the same high-quality finish and materials, fusing everything together in a glassfibre frame. Xperia Tablet Z is incredibly slim and lightweight at 6.9mm and 495g and is available in black or white and in LTE and WiFi versions. The tablet is a powerhouse featuring Qualcomm(R) Snapdragon(TM) S4 Pro asynchronous quad core processor and has the highest levels of water resistance (IP55 & IP57) ever delivered in a tablet, making it immune to accidental spills and splashes.

The tablet has a screen size of 10.1” and packs in 1,920 x 1,200 resolution (highest in its category). It also shows 20 per cent more color than the latest iPad, according to Sony. There’s an eight-megapixel camera on back, and a front-facing two-megapixel camera. The Xperia Tablet Z will ship running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but will be updated to Android 4.2 shortly after launch.

As with the Xperia Tablet S, the tablet is meant to be used as a companion device for the living room. It has an infrared port, which enabled you to use it as a remote control. A new app called TV SideView also gives you the ability to access program guides, search for content by voice, and share what you’re watching via social networks.

The tab promises to deliver great performance, as there’s no problem swapping between the homescreens and app drawer and even loads up selected applications with a snap.

There'll be 16, 32 and 64GB models available with the 32GB version offering LTE/4G and there's also a micro SD slot on board for boosting the storage. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and DLNA.

The tablet Z also includes Battery Stamina Mode to boost the existing capacity (of around 8 hours).

Sony expects the Tablet Z to launch this Spring, at $499 for the base 16GB model and $599 for the 32GB model.
