The Kubxlab's Ampjacket for iPad mini ($40), iPhone 5 ($30), and iPod touch 5G ($25) are designed to boost the audio output of your device through a passive audio amplification system, with the company claiming enhancements to volume and clarity. The cases have been designed in such a way that you don’t need battery draining accessories.
The special design of ampjacket diverts the phone’s speaker through boosting channels at channels at the back of the phone that increase the volume, making the sound, according to the packaging blurb, twice as loud.
Ampjacket for iPad mini is a single piece of semi-soft TPU, available in colour options including matte-finished grey, black, or white. The case easily wraps around the body of the tablet, snapping over the edges to form a good hold. The case also leaves all ports and buttons of the tablet well. However, the amplification system on the back of the case adds significant thickness.
In terms of design, there are two raised columns extend all the way from the speakers to the top of the case. In the middle they have a circular opening for the Apple logo, and there’s a ravine between them that can hold the Smart Cover for an alternate viewing angle.
Kubxlab’s iPhone 5 case is different form the tablet case. The case for iPhone is made of hard plastic instead of TPU and is available in red, orange, green, blue, and pink colours. At the bottom, a single opening exposes the headphone port, microphone, and Lightning port, while the speaker is covered by an extended segment of plastic.
In terms of audio quality, all three Ampjackets make their respective devices significantly louder. The audio quality may sound similar to the unassisted speakers, but somewhat channeled. However, the problem with the ampjacket is that it distorts the audio quality when the sound is amplified at a larger volume.
In short, the case does what it claims in advertisements. For $30 the case is good for those who want to raise the audio pitch of their devices.
