Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. Nokia Lumia 920: A detailed spec comparison

By: iPadfanzz Editor on March 22, 2013

Both Samsung Galaxy S4 and Nokia Lumia 920 are high-end smartphones and both of them are amazing. First Galaxy S4. With pretty much limited amount of modifications Samsung did on the hardware part, the real difference was from the inside. The S 4 also proves that the company can build a central brand the way Apple has with the iPhone. On the other side, Nokia 920 is also a high-end smartphone that looks trendy, expensive and sophisticated. It's also large and heavy. Both Nokia and Samsung have pretty much done everything to deliver the very best the technology has to offer to consumers. Let’s do a comparison to find out what these tech slabs has to offer us.

 Look and Feel

Galaxy S4

The S4 looks a lot similar to the S3 and sticks with familiar materials, and unfortunately that still means a whole lot of plastic. Both the front panel and back panel are made of brushed plastic, but with a textured pattern of tiny circles laid over it. Thus, the phone gives an industrial, textured look. The Galaxy S 4 takes a hybrid shape, something between the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II with the curved tops, bottoms, and corners of the Galaxy S III. The elongated home button is GSIII-style.

Nokia Lumia 920

The Lumia 920 has a unibody construction, a unique curved-glass design, and is available in red, yellow, grey, black and white. It gives trendy and expensive looks. The 920 retains the Lumia 900's perfectly flat top and bottom, round spines, and distinct 90-degree angles around the face. The 920’s curvier back gives it a more comfortable palm feel than the Lumia 900's mostly straight plane.

Screen and display

Galaxy S4

The S4 has joined the 1080p brigade. The S4 has 5-inch display with 1,920-by-1,080-pixel (1080p) Super AMOLED panel.  The S4 features a pixel density of 441 ppi. The display uses Adapt Display technology, which makes sure that Super AMOLED screen adjusts itself depending on what sort of content you are viewing. So games will have different display settings compared to movies. It's topped with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which should stop it getting scratched up.

Nokia Lumia 920

The Lumia 920 has a 4.5 inch screen with resolution of 1280x768 (16:10 aspect ratio). It has a pixel densit  of 332 ppi. It's an IPS LCD screen with an anti-glare filter. The 920's screen is curved like the Lumia 800's Nokia calls this 2.5D) and also works if you're wearing gloves.
Processor

Galaxy S4

The S4 has the long-rumoured octo-core 1.6GHz Exynos 5 processor. It has amazing 8 cores. While four cores are powered by ARM's A15 architecture. These will be high-performance cores and run at 1.6GHz. The rest four use A7 architecture. These are cores with extremely good power efficiency and run at 1.2GHz. Samsung claims that this technology provides users best balance of performance as well as battery life. Back this up with 2GB of RAM and you should have a nice tech slab efficient for doing multi-tasking at ease.

Nokia Lumia 920

The Lumia 920 will run Windows Phone 8 (see below) and has a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip, backed by 1GB of RAM.

Battery

Galaxy S4

The S4 has a 2,600mAh battery. That means it will be useful for its four high-powered Cortex-A15s and four slower Cortex-A7s. Different speed processors mean that less intensive tasks don't use the juice of all the cores, saving power – ARM calls this trick big.LITTLE. That would be of great help given that with 1080p resolutions, smart gesture tracking, and multi-window apps all running at once, anything less than a powerhouse could glitch.

Nokia Lumia 920

The 920 has a 2000mAh battery unit – more or less on the same level as the Android flagships. cThe Nokia Lumia 920 is officially rated at 10 hours of 3G talk time but tests show it lasts just under 9 hours. The Lumia 920 has a large, sharp display that’s suitable for watching videos and it will last you around 6 hours and 20 minutes (in Airplane mode).

Camera

Galaxy S4

The Galaxy S 4 has a new 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. It is complete with LED flash, autofocus, and 1080p video recording. On the front, the Galaxy S 4 sports a 2-megapixel camera. The camera app uses the same UI as the Galaxy Camera. The camera comes with a high speed shutter that allows for features like Drama Shot, which creates a collage of sequential photos in a single image. The 2MP front-facing camera allows for new features like Dual Shot, which inserts the photographer into the picture in an offset frame. Then there is Dual Video Call which combined the front camera with the rear camera to create a split-screen display for video calls. There’s also Eraser Shot which will scan through an image and wipe out any unnecessary clutter from the picture. Samsung's own ChatOn now supports up to three video callers at once and share screens.

Nokia Lumia 920

While the 920 is down on megapixels versus the Galaxy S4 (8.7 to 13), the 920 delivers good photos and beautiful 1080p video recording in many conditions. The camera is good for photos under daylight conditions and performs equally well in low-light situations, where most phones’ built-in cameras fail miserably. The 920 uses advanced floating lens technology, which makes the smartphone take in five times more light than competing smartphones without using flash, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night. The smartphones gives consistent photo quality but had had problems with contrast and absolute sharpness compared with the others. The camera has an image stabilisation feature which lets users click stable and clear photos. With Smart Shoot, the phone's camera clicks several images in a burst and you can select the one that you like the most. You can add or remove objects in the images while using Smart Shoot. However, Panorama mode is quite standard.  The Nokia Lumia 920 also comes with Nokia City Lens, the latest addition to the Nokia location suite. By pointing the camera at a city street, City Lens overlays information about restaurants, shops, hotels and more on the surfaces of buildings, for the most intuitive way to explore surroundings.

Software

Galaxy S4

The Galaxy S4 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the most up-to-date version of Android. Above that Samsung has Touch Wiz overlay, a customized interface. With TouchWiz, the company has added a a lot of software enhancements, like gestures, better notifications tray that offers a ton more toggling options to quickly turn settings on and off. In addition to your usual toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, you'll also see toggles for call-blocking mode and eye-tracking gestures. The Multi-View feature allows users to run two apps at the same time on the 5-inch 1080P HD display. The AirView feature comes over from the Galaxy Note 2, but it doesn’t require the S Pen. With Air View, users can hold their finger above the screen for a preview of a message, a photo and more. The Smart Pause feature means that the smartphone will automatically pause a video when the user looks away. This is a handy feature, but not a killer feature on its own. Samsung has also delivered an upgrade to S Voice with the Samsung Galaxy S4. The phone now includes a driving mode that is designed to help users drive without distractions and get information they need without the need to upgrade to a better in dash system or buy a new car with a built-in infotainment system. With the Samsung Galaxy S4, up to eight of devices can join together to turn the phones into a makeshift party station or even a surround sound system for watching a movie. Another useful feature is WatchON, which pares with IR controllers in the power button to let users can control their home theater system without the need for a separate remote. There is also S Translator software which quickly translates between English and a number of other languages by speech or by text. Samsung also announced the birth of S Health, a calorie-counter/pedometer in one that uses phone sensors like the accelerometer and barometer to track your steps, jogs, hops, jolts, snacks, and perspiration.

Nokia Lumia 920

As a Windows Phone 8 device, the interface of Nokia's Lumia 920 shares a lot of similarities with Windows Phone 7, however, there are a few new tweaks and features which make it much more customisable than ever before. The Live Tiles is an easy to understand and adjust setup, which organizes everything in a sensible way. Live tiles can provide a great alternative to Android. You can "pin" tiles to the home screen for a simple and clear view of what's important to you -- social media, weather, news and more. There are three different sizes that display varying amounts of information, and you can arrangement and pin whatever you like. The good part about Live Tiles is that it catches the eye and works intuitively. It is less cluttered and confusing than other platforms. For 920, the first party apps are Nokia Transit and Nokia Drive that provide real options for navigation, while Nokia City Lens, which is an augmented reality app. Nokia Music provides free streaming, but if you're on Windows Phone you really should be subscribing to Xbox Music Pass anyway. On the other hand, Nokia has a section of the store with entries like Groupon, Mirror's Edge (yes, it's old, but it's so good), ESPN, and a few others. However, the WP8 falls behind iOS and Android in terms of apps. You'll find major names like Angry Birds, and social media apps like Twitter and Facebook, but if you love the lesser known apps, you'll have to find bad knockoffs.

The 920 comes with Nokia Maps, a super-charged version of Bing Maps. It gives you the ability to save maps offline, but you also get indoor maps of popular venues, more augmented reality, and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. Nokia has tweaked the interface a bit as well, with a swipe-up offering listed options for your location.

Performance

Galaxy S4

The S4 has blown away the competition in fresh benchmark tests posted online. The powerhouse smartphone offers double the performance of Samsung's Galaxy S3 and Apple's iPhone 5. The benchmark was done on the US variant of S4 running on a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU, and the powerful quad-core chipset successfully beats its competition with a top score of 3163 points. The S4 delivers amazing performance despite the need to power up a 1080p display and support a bunch of advanced software features such as Eye Tracking technology.

Nokia Lumia 920

The Nokia Lumia 920 is the fastest Lumia yet. The 920 runs on a modern processor, Qualcomm's dual-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz. The S4 has new CPU and GPU, which work in concert to make the Windows Phone 8 experience lightning fast. What this means is even the most sophisticated apps and complex user interfaces will run buttery smooth. Paired with the new Adreno 225 GPU, the new Lumias also promise to bring console quality gaming and even more stunning graphics. With 4G LTE, you can surf the Web, video conference, or play multiplayer games at up to 10 times the speed of conventional 3G. The 920 also delivers better graphics performance and saves power in the process. The proof is in how fast your web browser displays pages, how quickly your navigation app responds.
