At&T has said it has begun rolling out an over the air update out to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S to support for the Wireless Emergency Alert System. The system is designed to send out three types of alerts: presidential alerts for national emergencies, AMBER alerts for missing children, and severe weather alerts.

You'll receive a notification from the carrier when your update is ready, but only if you're using iOS 6.1 or higher.

The update adds a new section to the notifications settings on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, thus letting users to toggle both AMBER alerts and weather alerts, but presidential alerts can't be turned off. All of the alerts will be set to "on" by default.

WEA messages are always free of cost, so you don't have to worry about going over your texting limit.
