Siri gets wiser in iOS 7, ditches Google for search

As part of Apple’s iOS 7 preview, Apple showed off new features and improvements to its virtual assistant called Siri.

In the new software overhaul, Siri get a brand-new interface, voice monitoring, and a results panel that appears on the bottom of the screen. Siri has also got smoother female (or male) voices. In addition, it now supports French and German languages, with more languages coming soon.

Siri now supports listening to your voicemail, enabling and disabling services, and more intelligent searching.

Among other features, Siri now has Twitter integration, so when you say “Tell me what Joe is saying,” and it will display a full list of Joe’s tweets. At the same time, Siri has also ditched Google as a search option. Earlier, if you requested a search, it'd kick you out to Safari to perform it. But now, it would take you to Wikipedia and Bing searches. The move is the latest snub from Apple, which previously deprecated Google Maps and YouTube from its built-in iOS app selection, replacing only the mapping app with in-house solution.

Further, if you need to turn off Bluetooth, just say, “turn off Bluetooth” and Siri will comply. Apple has also allowed Siri to access higher functions on certain devices, for example the control of Bluetooth radios and screen brightness. Contextual queries have been improved, with new commands like "Play my last voicemail" added to current offerings.
