A new Kickstarter project called “Spinpod” looks to improve your panoramic photos and videos through the use of a spinning pod designed for smaller cameras such as smartphones and GoPros.
Daniel Aharoni and Zhiping Chen have taken their product to the crowdfunding platform, where it's currently eyeing a funding goal of $75,000.
The puck-shaped Spinpod runs on a built-in rechargeable battery. It can move in either direction and has two modes, letting you alter the speed depending on what kind of pics or videos you’re snapping. The iPhone snugly fits into the oversized slot and a thumbwheel clamps it into place. You can also place a camera on the top of the Spinpod or you can use the included tripod mount which clamps into the phone-hole.
To make it work, you first need to insert your camera inside the 2.5 inch wide slot (a 1/4-20 threaded insert is also available for mounting other cameras and tripods), spin the knob to lock the device and finally chose the mode and timer options through capacitive touch controls on the top surface of the device.
The device proves extremely useful for perfectly stitched panoramas, given its ability to rotate the camera near its axis on a stable platform. It can also be used for time-lapse videos, as the Spinpod can be set to rotate ~0.06 degrees every 0.5, 1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds.
