Drones to watch over US highways

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 31, 2013

The Federal Highway Administration and the Georgia Department of Transportation is thinking of utilizing drones for inspecting bridges and roads, survey lands with laser mapping, and even alert officials to traffic jams or accidents. The project which has already received $74,984 from the state department will help workers safeguard the 4 million miles nation’s highways crisscrossing the country.

The organization is also working on the roadmap to achieve the desired results.

Among the several states considering the usefulness of civilian drones is Georgia. The state is also competing to become one of several flight-test regions for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration — a step in the FAA's plan to open up U.S. civilian airspace to drones by 2015.

Drones, which till now are known for their deadly role in the military combat in highly hostile environments in the far flung areas of the world, can now be used to help safeguard state roads and bridges, irrespective of their size. For instance, small drones with cameras might take off vertically from the back of a truck to help inspect a bridge. Similarly, the bigger ones – aircraft-size Reaper or Global Hawk drones could spend hours surveying traffic conditions.

It would also be very cost effective to use drones since the operational costs of using manned helicopters doing the same job are pretty high.

Facebook's mobile ad revenue doubles in Q4

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 31, 2013

Facebook has reiterated that the future is mobile, with Mark Zuckerberg asserting during a fourth-quarter earnings call that "Facebook is a mobile company."

During the fourth quarter, Facebook’s advertising revenues from mobile apps surged 40 per cent. In the fourth quarter, 23 percent of revenue from ads came from mobile, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said.

"Marketers are realizing more and more that Facebook is one of the best places to reach customers on mobile," she said.

In terms of the numbers, Facebook said its revenues were $1.585 billion, up from $1.131 billion, during the same period last year. However, the company’s profits took a beating as it dropped from $302 million in 2011 to $64 million during the fourth quarter. Now mobile apps account for 23 percent of Facebook’s overall revenue, compared with 14 percent in the previous quarter.

The company said the drop in profits was primarily due to increased costs related to mobile and advertising products.

The company said the next step will be to "get really good at building 'mobile first' experiences."

CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 8-year-old company promises to develop a full-fledged mobile advertising business, and said the next growth phase could come from "getting really good at building 'mobile first' experiences."

Zuckerberg said the social networking site’s new search tool could turn into a meaningful business for us. For now, Facebook is refining Graph Search and working on rolling it out to all users, Zuckerberg said.

Recently Facebook has launches various services as it seeks to stay ahead in the fast-moving Web market and it plans to spend heavily to recruit talent in 2013 as the company pushes forward with new product development.

iPad still dominates global tablet sales in Q4 2012: IDC

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 31,2013

Although the iPad is getting a little less attention in the computer tablet market now, it is still the most popular tablet and that too by a long way.

Apple has a 43.6 percent market share for the last quarter, as the company shipped 22.9 million tablets during the period. Apple suffered a loss of 6.8 per cent of the marketshare, but the loss was substantially less than what IDC monitored earlier this year.

"We expected a very strong fourth quarter, and the market didn't disappoint," said Tom Mainelli, research director, Tablets, at IDC. "New product launches from the category's top vendors, as well as new entrant Microsoft, led to a surge in consumer interest and very robust shipments totals during the holiday season. The record-breaking quarter stands in stark contrast to the PC market, which saw shipments decline during the quarter for the first time in more than five years."

At the same time, Samsung held the second place with its shipping numbers amounting to 7.9 million units with a market share of 15.1 percent market share – a growth of huge 263 percent year-on-year increase.

Amazon (11.5 per cent marketshare) ASUS (5.8 per cent) and Barnes and Noble (1.9 per cent) round out the top five, while other manufacturers were still able to claim 22.1 percent of total tablet.

Everything you need to know about BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 and the new BB 10 OS

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 31, 2013

Canada's tech giant Research In Motion Ltd, has launched the much delayed BlackBerry 10 with much fanfare and with a slew of new features and innovations. The two new phones are Z10, which is a touchscreen device and Q10 that retains the famous keyboard that has built much of BlackBerry’s growth. The new devices come with lots of new features that will keep the company’s customers happy.

At an event in New York City, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins, the company announced the two new phones which it has been working for the past two years.

The Z10

First in the pack is the Z10 which features a full touchscreen interface, and lacks physical QWERTY keyboard. It is a compact phone with a screen size of 4.2-inches and closer to the iPhone. On the screen there are only three physical buttons – power on top, volume up and down on the right side, so overall the phone has a clean design. The screen comes with a 1280 x 768 screen resolution and that comes to 356 pixel per inch. The smartphone is powered by a dual-core CPU clocked to 1.5GHz with 2GB RAM. The Z10 has 16 GB mass memory but this can be expanded to 32GB.

The phone has an eight megapixel rear camera with 1080 pixel video-recording capacity and a two megapixel camera with 720 pixel video-recording. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC support.

The Z10 is 130 millimeters (5.1 inches) in length and weighs 137 grams – slightly longer and heavier than the iPhone 5.

The Q10

The Q10 has been re-designed and re-invented for the BlackBerry 10 platform and offers customers a powerful mobile computing experience. The phone has a 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard. It also has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM and 16GB mass memory. The device supports LTE.

"Combined with the 4G LTE network and service plans from Sprint, BlackBerry Q10 customers will be delighted with a re-invented communication experience, seamless multitasking, easy access to multiple social networks and the peace of mind that BlackBerry security gives them," the company said in a press release.

BlackBerry 10 OS

At the heart of both the devices is BlackBerry 10, a polished, multipurpose and world class operating system that gives users a single interface for the customers to see, for instance, your work and home calendar. Colors in the OS are rich and icons large enough to easily touch, and animations flow smoothly. Especially the fade that you see when slowly swiping from one screen to the next, is what really catches your eye. In a nutshell, the new layout of the new Os combines a handful of playing ars spread out in an overlapping row. To the far left, you’ve got BlackBerry Hub, the universal inbox where you can see all your messages and notification alerts. And to the right of it there’s the "Active Frame" area, a nerdy name to represent the multitasking screen that stores up to eight thumbnails of your open apps. To its right again you’ll see your pages of app icons, which you can rearrange, delete, and plop on top of each other to create folders. The good part is you can access the dialer, universal search, and camera from every screen.

If you select work, the photos you take with the BB10 camera are stored in a different place to those you take with it in personal mode. As one BlackBerry executive put it, “If you get fired, you don’t want the boss to delete all the photos you took of your kids”.

The new operating system combines all social networks, emails, messages and other communications into a single inbox. There are apps and icons that users can easily work with. There is a notification hub.

In terms of multitasking, even if there’s an app in the background, it doesn’t stop. There is Siri-like functinality in BB10 OS and users can dial number with voice commands. A lot of big-ticket apps are already available.

BlackBerry Social Hub

IT’s the way how you’ll connect to all the important social networking sites into one place. Users can manage all their social settings from the hub as all they need to do is to slide to the right to go to the Hub and manage all their notifications from within this without having to open separate apps for each of the services.

BlackBerry Messenger

Now coming to the most important part for an professional user – the new BlackBerry Messenger in BB 10 – which now comes with the option of video-calling as well. The users get services like messaging services and with the option of video calling, hard-core BB users have another good reason to stay on. There’s a new feature called Screen Share which lets you share your screens with one another while you are in the middle of a video call. So now users can share pics, books, spreadsheets, documents, books, etc. all in real-time.

BlackBerry Balance

The new feature allows users to switch modes with gestures on the homescreen. So now you can split work apps from personal apps.

Typing on the BlackBerry

Given that efficiency is the most important thing for a corporat warrior, the BlackBerry now emphasises on typing with one thumb. When typing, the BB10 keyboard allows users to flick words upward to form sentences in a flash or swipe a finger horizontally to quickly delete. The keyboard also comes with built-in multi-language support that’s accessible with a gesture and the phone will recognise when users switch languages in the middle of the email, again a move aimed at markets like India.

BlackBerry Story Maker

You can now create slideshows with music, transitions, captions, photos and video right on your device. You can aggregate video and music content into one stream.

BlackBerry World and Apps

While presenting the new smartphones and the new software to the public, the key question before Research in Motion (RIM) President and Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins, was how will it have the apps that people are now addicted to play on their iPhone and Android phones.

“The company has worked with software developers to stock its BlackBerry World store, which includes apps and music and movies, to have 70,000 apps out of the gate. RIM announced that popular apps like Facebook, Skype, Kindle, Twitter, Angry Birds, Evernote, Rdio, ESPN Scorecenter, Flixter and Cut the Rope will be in the store for consumers,” Heins said.

E-mail

RIM has not lost its flavour in carrying the long loved tradition of the email to BlackBerry 10 OS. You can flag messages, mark messages as unread, file them by folder, and invite the contact to a meeting.

The new BlackBerry 10 has created a lot of buzz among technology watchers as well as financial analysts, as it offers a great third alternative in the already crowded smartphone market. The company’s future a lot depends on the new operating system as well as the smartphones which it hopes with help it to claw its way back into an industry now dominated by Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy. However, success will come only if consumer and business customers embrace the new technology happily.

RIM launched its first BlackBerry back in 1999 for corporate executives to stay in touch with their clients and their offices, and the company quickly cornered the market for secure corporate and government emails. However, with the onset of new OS, its star faded with a 3.4 percent global showing in the fourth quarter - down from 20 percent three years before. Its North American market share is even smaller - a mere 2 percent in the fourth quarter.

Response

The Z10 device won a lukewarm review from The Wall Street Journal's tech blogger Walt Mossberg, who complained of a shortage of apps.

David Pogue of The New York Times, apologized for describing BlackBerry as doomed in the past. The Z10 touchscreen device was "lovely, fast and efficient, bristling with fresh, useful ideas," he said.

The BlackBerry Z10 will be available in Canada on Feb. 5 and in the U.K. early next month. In the U.S. it will be available in March. RIM says the Z10 will be sold for a suggested retail price of $199 with a two-year contract; an unlocked version will be sold for $599.

Legendary iPhone hacker geohot to launch new photo sharing app called Reactions

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 30, 2013

The legendary iPhone hacker George Hotz is all set to launch a new iPhone app called Reactions.

Hotz, well known for his widely publicized hacks of the iPhone and Playstation 3, said the idea behind the app was to design something different. Reactions is different in that it uses both the front- and rear-facing cameras of the iPhone in order to capture both views at once — in the same image.

The app is photo sharing with a twist. The app takes a photo of you along with whatever picture you’re clicking. The iPhone’s front and rear cameras are utilized at once. So instead of just seeing your cappuccino, your friends can see how you feel about your bike ride.

The app is good for extreme social sharing and once each two-way photo is taken, it will be published to your Facebook account.

Reactions is currently going through Apple’s approval process, and should be arriving in the iTunes App Store shortly.

Obama backs immigration reforms for skilled tech workers

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 30, 2013

US President Barack Obama has spoke in favour of changing immigration laws for foreign born programmers and engineers that will attract skilled foreign entrepreneurs to the United States and allowing graduate students with advanced technical degrees to stay in the country.

During a speech in Las Vegas, Obama said the immigration reform principles released by a bipartisan group of senators are similar to the positions he outlined during his campaign. As per the current rules, U.S.-educated computer programmers and engineers could be deported once finishing school.

The president outlined that not all startup founders are able to secure visas and stay in the US. He particularly mentioned the case of Instagram which was co-founded by an immigrant -- Brazilian Michel Krieger who studied at Stanford University.

The president said he would only send his proposals to Congress if lawmakers fail to reach a deal.

Besides the president, a handful US Senators - Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Chris Coons, D-Del. – introduced new legislation called the Immigration Innovation Act of 2013. The bill seeks to reform the nation’s immigration laws for high-skilled workers. The idea is to increase the H-1B visa cap from 65,000 to 115,000, along with easing green cards rules.

What’s ailing RIM's Blackberry and will BB10 help rescue it?

By: iPadfanzz staff on December 29, 2013

Research In Motion, the Canadian manufacturer of the BlackBerry family of smartphones and PlayBook tablet, is all set to release its BlackBerry 10 operating system and two smartphones designed to run on it.

In its communiqué, the company is referring BB10 as RIM's "new mobile computing platform that will power the next generation of smart phones and tablets". And as expected RIM has high hopes from the new operating system which it believes could be a “life-saver” for the company which has failed to address current market trends and designed its latest release primarily for existing users, building "the best BlackBerry for BlackBerry users".

Like industry analysts, investors too are betting big on the launch of the new handsets that will mark the beginning of remarkable comeback. RIM’s share of the global smartphone market has declined steadily from a peak of roughly 20 per cent in 2009 to about 6 per cent today.  However, the company was able to remain afloat due to continued strong sales in few markets and the annuity0-style services revenues it charges mobile phone operators for the its Blackberry services. While doing so the company has also undergone massive restructuring as it slashed 7,000 jobs and has taken stringent efforts to revive its ageing product portfolio.

One such reason for such a decline is that the enterprises no longer buy the bulk of smartphones and that consumers are opting to buy other devices that are more feature packed and comes at even lower cost such as iPhone and Anadroid operated smartphones, thus leading to a decline in sales for the company.’ Another argument is that the company is doing little or not effort in reviving its sagging sales in form of encouraging consumers to covert to RIM platform.

However, analysts say the RIM is ‘not dead yet!’ despite the fact that the enterprise market is rapidly being replaced by the iPhones. In a survey carried out by Gartner in December 2012, it was revealed that almost 14 per cent of the 222 companies surveyed in North America still want to do with BlackBerry as their primary platform in 12 months’ time. Those surveyed said they still want to keep their  BlackBerry for its security and its hard keyboard.

The industry expects the RIM will be buoyed in the short term by the pent-up demand for BB10 devices. However, many still question whether the new device and operating system have what it takes to sustain a turnaround at RIM and help the brand regain its “mojo”.

In total, the company will launch two devices – one with touchscreen only, the other with both a touchscreen and a Qwerty keyboard. At the same time the company is also encouraging developers to come out with a good number of apps. In order to boost up its offerings, RIM has already announced several music and video partners for its BB10 storefront, including Walt Disney Studios, Sony Pictures, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.

Despite all these efforts, analysts question whether it is “too late” for the Blackberry comeback or it is too little and too late. Looking at the size of investments and efforts required to create a sizeable marketshare in the highly competitive smartphone market, the road for RIM will certainly be filled with immense challenges that it has to past.

Apple rumoured preparing a 128GB iPad

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 29, 2013

Reports published in various tech blogs point towards a possible release of a $128 GB iPad. The slate would not be an entirely new model, but an upgrade to the current fourth-generation iPad.

Sources say the device will come in both black and white, as well as Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi+cellular variants.

There is a possibility that this will be a SKU aimed solely at education and government customers. Such a memory would be a good option for people to look at the full-sized iPad over the iPad mini.

Given that Apple updated the iPad in October, it is unlikely to see a brand new version so early in 2013. However, a 128GB upgrade would make lots of sense.

Nokia's Music+ subscription service brings lots of fun and thrill to Lumia owners for just $4/month

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 28, 2013

If you own one of the Lumia phones, the most compelling Winodows phone to date, then this news will bring music to your ears. Nokia has spruced things up by tossing a “+” sign onto the end of its music service. The company has started Nokia Music+, a new subscription-based service that costs just $3.99 per month.

Given that most music services charge $9.99 per month for their music service, so it would be a great deal as you can get Nokia Music+ for such a low cost.

With the new upgrade, you will get:

  1. Unlimited skips: Whether you like to skip from track to track, or just want extra control over what you hear. There’s no stopping you with Nokia Music+.
  2. Unlimited downloads: The free service allows you to download up to four Mixes (each of which contains hours of music) and play them without an Internet connection. The paid service removes this limit – you can download a massive supply of offline music you can swap as you wish.
  3. Higher quality: We were surprised by the high quality of streaming music from Nokia Music, even over a 2.5G connection. Nokia Music+ allows you to download music at eight times the existing quality. Plus, you can set rules to only download high quality when you’re on WiFi, for example.
  4. Lyrics: Words to the songs you’re listening to, right on your Nokia Lumia. Either in a scrolling list, Karaoke-style format, or a display you can scroll up and down.
  5. On your desktop: The Nokia Music+ subscription also gives you access to the service without your phone. A web-app gives you the ability to play Mixes on your computer, smart TV or other connected screens.

Aren’t you glad that you bought Nokia Lumia 920 or 810?

Nokia hasn't said just which countries beyond the US will get the more advanced service, but it should make a formal debut within the next few weeks.

Pentagon plans fivefold boost to its cybersecurity force

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 28, 2013

Pentagon wants to take its cybersecurity force from the present 900 to 4,900 over the next five years, said a report published in The Washington Post. Although the decision has not yet announced, the engagement has come on the request of the head of Gen. Keith B. Alexander, the Defense Department’s head of Cyber Command, and director of the NSA.

The effort is aimed towards bolstering the nation’s critical computer systems and conduct offensive computer operations against foreign adversaries, the government has said. The expansion will include troops as well as civilians.

However, it is still not clear how the government wants to go ahead in this direction, but it believed that the decision has been taken because of threat posed by attacks from China on the country’s military-related intellectual property.

The plan calls for the creation of three varieties of forces under the Cyber Command: “national mission forces” to protect computer systems that oversee power plants, electrical grids, and other key infrastructure which is critical to national and economic security. These combat mission forces will help commanders devise the strategies to execute attacks and carry out various offensive operations.

A senior government official said the “national mission” teams would focus their efforts overseas and that they take actions that would include helping the domestic authority – such as the FBI.

“There’s no intent to have the military crawl inside industry or private networks and provide that type of security,” the official said.

The government also made it clear that it would act only when there is a threat that could “really hurt.” Here we’re not talking about doing something to make sure that Mrs. Smith’s bank account didn’t get hijacked by somebody, he added.

Anonymous hacks and defaces US government website

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 26, 2013

Internet activist group Anonymous has hacked the US federal sentencing website in retaliation for the death of Aaron Schwartz, and has threatened to leak sensitive government information.

The group used the front page of Ussc.gov — the Federal agency that establishes sentencing policies and practices for the Federal courts — was filled with a declaration of "war" on the U.S. government.

Anonymous blamed US federal prosecutors and that country's justice system for the death of internet activist Aaron Schwartz.

Anonymous explained that they used this webiste for symbolic reasons. "Two weeks ago today, a line was crossed. Two weeks ago today, Aaron Swartz was killed. Killed because he faced an impossible choice. Killed because he was forced into playing a game he could not win -- a twisted and distorted perversion of justice -- a game where the only winning move was not to play," said the message posted by Anonymous on USSC website.

Swartz, 26, the Reddit programmer and Internet activist, committed suicide earlier this month and was facing hacking charges. His federal trial was due to be held in February. If found guilty, he could have faced up to 35 years in prison.

In a video, the group also talks of planting "multiple warheads" on "compromised systems" on various unnamed websites, and encourages members to download a given file from ussc.gov that is "primed, armed and quietly distributed to numerous mirrors."

The statement also suggested the hackers had sensitive information relating to a number of US judges that may be made public.

Audojo case gives full physical control while gaming on iPad

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 26, 2013

Audojo, the case with joysticks and buttons, is designed to give you the complete control over your tablet with analog sticks and physical buttons. This functionality was the much required especially for the iOS devices to give them competing power with console games.

It is a Kickstarter project now with a $240,000 goal. It currently has over $24,000 in pledges from 267 backers.

“With an install base of 100 million iPads and the largest library of games, we think there is the potential to be a major player in this space,” Audojo cofounder Matt Tullis told GamesBeat. “We’re delivering a form factor that combines the possibilities of the touchscreen with the benefits of physical controls, similar to the Wii U. When combined with the Apple TV, you can get a console-style experience on your TV.”

Given that the iOS currently doesn’t have any native controller support, the headphone jack is being used with the game. You can attach an iPad 2,3 or 4 to this case, and you’ll have precise control using a couple of actual analog joysticks. Besides you’ll also have two physical trigger buttons that will prove especially good for the first-person shooter games.

In the company’s pitch video, it showed Audojo working with shooter 1948: Dawn of Future and Cowboy Guns, which are both available now in the App Store.

If Audojo gets enough funding, the surely we’ll have in our hands a case that will turn the iPad into a portable console.

Twitter debuts Vine video-sharing app

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 26, 2013

Twitter has announced the launch of a standalone video-sharing app for iPhone called Vine, which let mobile users capture and share clips up to six seconds in length, which play on a loop within tweets.

"Posts on Vine are little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life. They're quirky, and we think that's part of what makes them so special," wrote Dom Hofmann, co-founder and general manager of Vine, in a blog post.

Vine, which is available for the Apple iPhone and the iPod Touch, is a free download on the App Store. Twitter noted that it's working on making Vine available on other platforms. Vine users don't need to have a Twitter account.

Analysts believe that the growing mobile video usage will give the Twitter the much needed push for the continued growth.

However, Twitter’s video launch will give tough competition to companies like Tout.com and Viddy, which both offer apps for taking short videos and posting them on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Analysts also believe the company to launch more such services in the coming period, including improvement in existing services like Vine.

The service is also being referred to by many as Twitter’s “Instagram for video.” The vuideo the users want to share are shot within the Vine app, and they can choose to have sound on of off.

A company spokesperson said the team tested videos of various lengths, ranging from 4 seconds to 10 seconds, while they were building Vine. In doing they found that 6 seconds length was idea from both the consumption and production side.

It is well known that Twitter has long history of determining specific, short length of content. The 140character limit of a tweet was based on limitations of text messages, but soon after its launch, the company added a whole host of services, including videos, photos, and article summaries.

McDonald's nutrition info now in QR Code form

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 26, 2013

In its latest effort to help people make informed decision about their food, popular fast food chain McDonalds’s has started using the package redesign that uses the QR codes which provides consumers nutritional information about their food.

The redesign would be carried out by the company on all their carry-out bags and fountain beverage cups, communicating “brand stories” and delivering facts with a mix of illustration and texts.

"Our new packaging is designed to engage with customers in relevant ways and celebrate our brand," said Kevin Newell, McDonald's chief brand officer. "Customers tell us they want to know more about the food they are eating and we want to make that as easy as possible by putting this information right at their fingertips."

Before implementing the new design the company spoke to various people and took their inputs. It even consulted the Global Advisory Council, which emphasized the importance of providing access to nutritional information and support suing the packaging to connect consumers to facts about menu items.

McDonald’s effort is also an extension of the company’s 2006 effort, which resulted in nutritional data being placed directly on product packaging.

The QR codes are being distributed at more than 14,000 McDonald restaurants in the United States and will expand to international markets throughout this year.

Temple Run 2 arrives on Android; available for download

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 25, 2013

The sequel to one of the most popular game on iOS, 'Temple Run 2', has been released for Android devices. You can now download the updated mobile game from Google Play.

The game's developers Imangi Studios released overwhelming response when its iOS version received20 million downloads within four days of the release. The new action and adventure sequel carries all the interesting features of the original version.

The new version promises to be even better than the original with new environments, graphics, and obstacles. Even there are more powerups, achievements and special power for each character.

The game carries much of the same great non-stop action that made the original a winner.

"We're just happy to have the launch much closer together for Temple Run 2 than on the original. We definitely have a lot of fans on Android, so we didn't want them to have to wait to get their hands on the sequel. It's as close to a simultaneous launch as we've ever been able to do," said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi.

"Navigate perilous cliffs, zip lines, mines and forests as you try to escape with the cursed idol. How far can you run?" the company wrote.

The original 'Temple Run' garnered over 170 million downloads in the year since its launch. The company now expects the same rush with the latest release as well.

Presently, Temple Run 2 has a 4.7 rating out of 5 on Google Play with just over 3,500 reviews. Some users, however, complained that there was no clear way to exit the game with a forced app shutdown.

Google to roll out redesigned, faster image search

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 24, 2013

Search giant Google will soon roll out a faster and reliable image search option that will give users a better experience. Google is coming out with the redesign based on the feedback from both users and webmasters.

Now, the images will be displayed in an inline panel and will be accompanied by the associated metadata and key information.

Previously, Google image search resulted in a grid like format, where users have to click on a particular image to see larger version and then have to click again to go to the originating site. The new tool will now show a larger image with detailed metadata and ribbons of other image results.

What’s good, presumably for photographers and website owners, is that the now that Google will be displaying the image metadata and the name of the website the image is coming from right next to the image, with a link to the originating image. In doing so Google has reduced the number of clicks one has to go through while going to the original traffic.

Google has been testing the newer version for some time now and it is likely to be rolled out in a few days.

The screen size of a smartphone has been growing. And in the last couple of years it has grown from the the 3.7″ original to 5 inch -7 inch. Apple’s mixed Q1 earnings: Revenues up 17.7% to $54.5 bn; $13.1 bn in profits at $13.81 EPS; 47.8 mn iPhones sold

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 24, 2013

Apple has announced its earnings for its first fiscal quarter of 2013 and it was a mixed bag for the company. In the first quarter, Apple’s revenues were $54.5 billion (up 17.7% from the year-ago quarter) with earnings of $13.81 per share. That’s a pretty good quarter in comparison with other companies.

The Cupertino-based technology giant posted healthy profits to the tune of $13.1 billion. This means that the company narrowly missed the industry estimates on the revenues front, but beat on profits.

Although expectations were pretty high by industry analysts and trade pundits for the company to post a stellar quarter but the company still managed to deliver handsome performance by many estimates.

“We’re thrilled with record revenue of over $54 billion and sales of over 75 million iOS devices in a single quarter,” CEO Tim Cook noted in the earnings release. “We’re very confident in our product pipeline as we continue to focus on innovation and making the best products in the world,” he added.

As one would expect this time the company’s booming business has lot to do with its booming hardware business. A slew of upgrade just right before the announcement of its quarterly results (iPhone 5 launch, the introduction of the iPad mini and refreshed iPods and MacBooks) also went in its favour. Apple also gained pretty heavily from the holiday buying frenzy.

It should also be noted that the company also beat its own guidance, which was $5 2billion in revnues and earnings of $11.75. If you adjust growth numbers for a 13 week quarter, iPhone grew 37 per cent and iPad grew 60 per cent.

Apple's Board of Directors has declared a cash dividend of $2.65 per share of the Company's common stock. The dividend is payable on February 14, 2013, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on February 11, 2013.

"We're pleased to have generated over $23 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "We established new all-time quarterly records for iPhone and iPad sales, significantly broadened our ecosystem, and generated Apple's highest quarterly revenue ever."

Here’s how Apple did versus what buy-side investors were looking for (via Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster):

Revenue: $54.5 billion versus $54.58 billion expected
EPS: $13.81 versus $13.34 expected
Gross Margin: 38.6% versus 39.5% expected
iPhone: 47.8 million versus 50 million expected
iPad: 22.9 million versus 23 million expected
Mac: 4.1 million versus 5 million expected
iPod: 12.7 million versus 12 million expected
March quarter revenue: $42 billion versus $41 billion expected
March quarter EPS: (We don't see EPS guidance) versus $09.40 expected
March quarter gross margin: 38% versus 38% expected

Here are some notes from the earnings:

iPad

22.9 million, 1.7 million per week, compared to 1.1 million, average rise of 60% per week, better than IDC forecast.
Customers love 4th gen iPad. iPad Mini a tremendous hit. In addition to the tremendous response, hit in the enterprise.
Barclays roll out of 8,000 iPads was most successful in Barclays IT history.
Outside US, 10,000 government workflow in Sweden, 10,000 in Netherlands.
3.4 million iPads in channel inventory, below target of 4-6 weeks of inventory.

Regarding the iPad, Cook said, “We had strong sales for iPad and iPad mini in the last quarter. It is clear [the iPad] is already cannibalising [Windows] some. There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity there. I’ve said for two or three years now that the tablet market will be larger than the PC market at some point. You can see by the growth in tablets and pressure on PCs that those lines are beginning to converge.”

iPhone

47.8 million, up 10%. 3.7 million per week, versus 2.6 million in year ago quarter. Consistent with IDC's forecast for smartphone market.
On Q/Q basis up 78%, more than IDC's projection.
Strong iPhone growth in each geographic segment. Up 2X in China.
iPhone 5 sales drove growth. 4-6 weeks of iPhone channel.
iPhone and iOS an exceptional experience people love.

At the conference call, Cook also promised that Apple has "incredible stuff" coming down its product pipeline.

Yahoo buys social content curator Snip.it, a Pinterest clone

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 23, 2013

Yahoo has acquired Snip.it, a young San Francisco Pinterest-like service that lets people create scrapbooks with articles, pictures, videos and other content found online.

Informing users about the development, Snip.it posted a message on its website saying it was “joining forces” with Yahoo and that the service was not longer available.

"For the past year and a half, we've worked tirelessly as a team to build the best social news platform on the Web," Snip.it said in the message. "We are thrilled at the opportunity to bring Snip.it's vision to a larger scale at Yahoo!" Snip.it launched in late 2011 as a place where people could share digital "scrapbooks" based on topics or themes of their choosing.

However, users wishing to download their data from the site can do by clicking a “Download my data” button halfway down the page.

However, it is still not clear what Snip.it would be working on at Yahoo. Further, financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed but unformed reports suggest that it could be in the tune of $15 million.

Google's Q4 earnings rise to $12 billion despite Motorola losses

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 23, 2013

Google’s fourth quarter earnings rose by 6.7 per cent, despite a financial drag caused by its expansion into device manufacturing and a decline in digital ad prices.

The company's earnings topped analyst estimates as its fourth quarter profit was up 6.7 per cent from a year earlier at $2.89 billion, or $8.62 cents per share, and for the full year Google's earnings grew 10 per cent to $10.74 billion.

However, things were not quite well on Motorola front as the unit continued to struggle posting a loss of $353 million besmirching the Internet giant's other profitable results. A year ago, when Motorola was an independent company, it posted a net loss of $80 million and an adjusted profit of $61 million.

Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette warned that results from Motorola would continue to be "variable" as it works through its restructuring and continues to write down intangible assets.

During the quarter ended December 31, revenues were up 36 per cent from the same a year before at $14.4 billion. For the year, revenues grew to $50.2 billion.

The revenues got a boost with more advertising pouring into Google during the holiday shopping season. The company has steadily delivered higher profits since the company went public in 2004.

What was positive for the company in terms of ad revenues was that Google’s average ad prices in the most recent quarter dropped by just 6 per cent from the same period in 2011. That’s very small during the economic downturn.

At the same time, Google was able to sell more video advertising on its YouTube subsidiary and other more graphical forms of marketing. In addition, more people clicked on the ads that appear on various platforms. Google’s total ad clicks rose 24 percent from the previous year.

Google also benefited a lot from the Android software which is now on the 500 million devices worldwide, giving the company an edge over Apple’s software for iPad and iPhone. Google CEO Larry Page said that his company is bound to benefit as the mobile market expands.

BlackBerry World is the new name for BlackBerry App World as RIM adds music and videos

By: iPadfanzz staff on January 21, 2013

RIM has renamed the name of its app store, BlackBerry App World, to BlackBerry World, as part of the preparations for the launch of BlackBerry 10. RIM says the change reflects new type of content, such as music and videos.

RIM says the Blackberry World will have more than apps to buy, as the new store will give options to purchase videos and music – thus making it a one-stop shop for entertainment needs of smartphone and tablet users.

RIM has previously said “music and video store access may be limited in some regions” — so it looks likely there will be regional supplier variation.

BlackBerry World also supports sharing by tapping NFC embedded BlackBerry smartphones together.
