Research Group develops 'glasses-free' 3D interface for iPad 2

By: Aseem Gaurav, April 12, 2011 (New Delhi)

A technology research group has unveiled a new software that adds 3D-functionality to the iPad 2. The unbelievable 3D effects on the Apple iPad 2 utilises the iOS tablet’s front facing camera, together with software called Head-Coupled Perspective, to track the position of a person’s head in 3D in real-time.

Researchers including Laurence Nigay and Jeremie Francone from the EHCI Research Group displayed how 3D effects could be achieved on an iPad 2 in a demo video.

The researchers say everything they have done is achieved through the use of the camera (the video description is given below) without even using the iPad 2’s accelerometer at all.
