A paper phone that holds good potential

In an effort that is aimed to create something different and unique in phones, designer Chengyuan Wei used the ancient art of origami to create a telephone made of paper that you can fold and actually use.

This simple paper phone is both lightweight and efficient, as all you need to do is pick up a piece of flat carboard to answer and dial. Pressing it slightly from both ends changes it from a flat surface to a tri-dimensional object. When you are not using it, the handset remains flat.

“If we look closely at objects that surround us, they often belong to a unified system, a system created by big commercial corporations. Our attitude and feelings toward objects are often sculpted to adapt systems because there usually isn't a second choice,” Wei said in his website.

“Everyday objects such as telephone are good example of these unified systems. Although less and less people use telephone, there are over thousands of telephone are made every day which are all look the same, and even no changes have been made during the past several decades.”

While working on his design, Wei took apart a telephone set and found that all the working parts of the phone form little of the large handset. Thus he designed a concept handset that’s light and whose structure is made out of paper.
