Vonage releases mobile app to compete with Skype; offers ultra low-cost calling and texts

Making a glorious return in the mobile app ecosystem, Vonage - a low-cost Internet phone provider that enables users to make phone calls using their broadband connection - has rolled out Vonage Mobile, new iPhone and Android apps, that allow for texts and calls.

Vonage claims that it is now offering per-minute voice prices that are 30 per cent less (for the 50 most called countries) than Microsoft’s VoIP service, and 70 per cent less than traditional mobile carriers.

A viable solution for people talking with friends and family overseas, the app works with Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G wireless data networks. To make calls, users can add credit from their app, through iTunes or Android Market, in increments of $4.99 and $9.99. The app automatically takes names from the directory list so you don't have to import them. If you are an existing Vonage customer, then using the app will bring additional benefits to you, like it makes calls to any Vonage home or business lines as free. This isn't Vonage's first foray into mobile apps — the company has an "Extensions" app for its home phone users which allows them to use their international calls anywhere.

“Vonage Mobile consolidates the best features of our prior applications, while adding important functionality, better value and improved ease of use. It combines the best of free high-def voice and messaging along with incredible value for traditional international calls, all while using the existing mobile number and address book for unsurpassed ease of use," said ” said Marc Lefar, CEO of Vonage, in a statement.

According to Vonage, one can call to any phone in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico from anywhere in the world will be free for a limited time.

Although the app consume a lot of space in terms on installation, you'll find the call quality at par with a standard landline. U.S. consumers roaming overseas can use the app, for which they'll have to pay roaming data charges.
