Viddy, a video version of Instagram, becomes top free iPhone app

By: Aseem Gaurav on April 20, 2012

Just after the popular photo sharing app Instagram rose to fame when Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg decided to buy the company in cash and share deals for $1 billion, many other near identical photo and video app also got a boost. Viddy is one such app that has skyrocketed in popularity. Why not? Because after the Facebook deal everybody wants to use and add some cool features to their photos and even videos. And surely I am also among those.

Viddy does with videos what Instagram does with still photos. It basically allows users to capture any moment in video and give it a cinematic touch—for free. Viddy, which turned one recently, enables users to shoot, customize, and share 15-second video clips directly from their handsets. Users can chose custom video overalays and video effects from their favourite movies, celebrities and  musicians and then share those video clips to the social networking services they love: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, email or SMS. All you have to do is to sign up using a Facebook or Twitter account.

The app makes it much convenient to post videos, just like any Tweet or Facebook entry, of the events as they happen during the day. However, videos are limited to 15 seconds. The cool effects that you can apply to your videos will make result in Super 8 movie camera, circa 1960, or a scratched film. Some of the effects that are available for download include: 3D effects and additional filters for retro film looks, overexposures, fish-eye-lens views, etc.

The app will be of great help to journalists as they have to frequently share pictures and videos via Twitter and other sites. The company saw over 40 million app views in January and list is getting bigger by the day. Viddy Co-Founder and CEO Brett Obrien emphasizes that the app saw pretty much significant growth after Facebook launches its Timeline app in February. You can download the app from the App Store for free and if you’re on Android – you’ll have to wait!
