Pitfall!, Activision's legendary jungle-crawler, comes to iOS after 30 years

Activision has released 30-year-old side-scrolling action thriller Pitfall!, as an endless runner-style game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, that is quite similar to Temple Run in gameplay. As some of you may know that Pitfall! was one of the most successful video games that was released by Activision for the Atari 2600 in 1982.

This new incarnation sports all-new three dimensional visuals, and interesting gameplay tweaks like addition of mine carts and vehicles and branching paths, are sure to keep the players on their toes. Pitfall is a behind-the-back ‘infinite runner’ game that sends players on a quest for gold bars by speeding through a variety of environments and overcome obstacles by performing timed swipes for jumps, slides and other moves. Along with retro, high-definition graphics, Pitfall has controls that are quite similar to Temple Run.

In this game, Activision has tried to give a new twist to the original formula by making the environment more dynamic and alive thanks to rolling logs, collapsing bridges, falling trees, and various other animated hurdles. Occasionally, the game’s main character also stumbles into minecart and motorcycle segments. In several environments, players navigate through narrow trenches, dark caverns, and cascading waterfalls with dramatic camera angles.

According to the company every level is crafted from the ground up and as the player progress they can buy power-ups and earn experience, enabling them to compete with friends for the best high scores. Players can also spend in-game currency to continue from certain key checkpoints on their run.

Overall, Pitfall! is a well-presented game and features attractive, distinctive cel-shaded visuals. It also offers a cinematic orchestral soundtrack and one-liners from Harry himself. The core gameplay, is solid but becomes repetitive without paying the in-app purchases, which may not appear appealing to some users. Some other flaws of the game include: rough polygonal edges and unreliable touch controls.  Another major concern is strong reliance on in-app purchases for consistent progress. Despite these hiccups the app offers an interesting twist to endless running game and is worth the price tag.
