According to Facebook's 'mention' charts, Bolt was the ‘most mentioned athlete’ during the whole of Olympic Games, on Facebook. The report also said that Bolt enjoyed equal popularity on Twitter.

The report said he was the most talked about athlete on the social site, clinching the title with over 80,000 tweets per minute following his 200 meter victory in the Games.

Bolt was followed by U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, while Gabby Douglas, an American gymnast came in third, The Telegraph reported.

The figures bolster the organisers' claim that London was the first real 'social media Games'.

The survey also mentioned that Douglas was the most talked about female athlete on the social networking site followed by Jessica Ennis and Tennis ace, Serena Williams.

In terms of overall increase in Facebook fan base, Phelps took the lead with an additional 747,300 new digital fans, while Bolt added 694, 200 new fans and Ennis 621,600 additional supporters.
