Believe it or not: Internet emits 830 million tonnes of carbon dioxide

A study conducted by researchers from the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) and Bell Labs suggest that Internet and other components of information communication and technology (ICT) industry produces more than 830 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, every year.

The report, published in journal Environmental Science & Technology, also expects the emission figures to double by 2020.

The emissions from the ICT industry (mainly from video, voice and other cloud services) accounts for 2 per cent of global CO2 emissions -- the same proportion as the aviation industry produces.

To control this, the study elaborates, will require accurate but still feasible models, which must look into data traffic, energy use, and CO2 production in networks across the globe.

Depending on their models, the researchers suggest that three things: more efficient power usage of facilities, more efficient use of energy-efficient equipment and renewable energy sources, will hold the key to reduce the CO2 emission in the coming period.
