Sony has just announced a new ultraslim 10.1-inch Android 4.1 tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z. The Android 4.1 tablet has the same design just like its smartphone counterpart, but under the hood there’s some really good specifications that makes it a prominent contender in tablet market dominated by the iPad.

The tablet is powered by a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, and comes with 2GB RAM, 32GB storage. The Xperia Tablet Z is a significant upgrade over the company's current Xperia Tablet S, and has a 10.1-inch screen with 1,920 x 1,200 screen resolution. It also has an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R camera, NFC, LTE (MDM9215M radio), microSD expansion and Sony's very own "S-Force" virtual surround sound technology.

Sony also says the tablet has the first backside-illuminated sensor it's put in a tablet. All such features comes packed in just 6.9mm thickness, which compares favorably to the 7.2mm-thick iPad mini — previously the thinnest tablet as we have known. So, Sony now has the world's thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet! The tablet weighs just 495g and supports both NFC and LTE.

From the official images, the Xperia Tablet Z looks like a larger version of Sony's Xperia Z line of handsets. Just like the smartphone, the tablet is both waterproof and dustproof.

Sony says this product is aimed at the Japanese market, where it'll be released this spring.
