Atari Inc, the popular video game maker, and three affiliates have filed for bankruptcy protection in Manhattan in an effort to free the company from French parent Atari SA, formerly Infogrames.
The company is now planning to build Atari Inc into a "modest" business based on "digital and mobile platforms."
“The Chapter 11 process constitutes the most strategic option for Atari’s U.S. operations, as they look to preserve their inherent value and unlock revenue potential unrealized while under the control of Atari SA,” according to the statement. “During this period, the company expects to conduct its normal business operations.”
Atari, founded in 1972, owns or manages more than 200 games, including “Centipede,” “Missile Command” and “Rollercoaster Tycoon.”
