How to use your iPad and LinkedIn account to land a job

By: iPadfanzz staff on February 18, 2013

There’s no doubt that a computer tablet like an iPad and a cup of coffee can easily land you a job.

Either you are a student or a working professional out of job for a few months, you can pick up your iPad and switch on your wi-fi or 3G connection and with a sip of hot coffee, you can go and achieve your most important goal of finding a job.

But before you pick your tablet you must remember that it’s not too difficult to find a job provided you do effective and efficient searching.

To begin with, open your LinkedIn profile on your iPad and try to complete your LinkedIn profile with as much as information as possible, like your education, your work history, your skills, your volunteer experience, your association memberships, recommendations, links to your professional websites and Twitter, along with an engaging summary that can easily attract potential employers. However, there are also certain things that you shouldn’t include. Here is LinkedIn's 2012 list of the top 10 buzzwords that are overused by professionals in the United States:

Creative
Organizational
Effective
Motivated
Extensive experience
Track record
Innovative
Responsible
Analytical
Problem solving

According to career experts, everyday thousands of business partners, employers and clients search the web for professionals. They also say that the most effective point when it comes to job searching is networking. Perhaps the most valuable networking resource for college grads, regardless of how long ago they graduated, is the alumni body from their school. More recommendations on your LinkedIn profile means that you get a higher trust of reliability. Ask your co-workers, clients, to give their feedback. Also, make a practice also to recommend others whom you think deserve.

And as you find out the companies where similar people work, get a good understanding of what skill set they possess.

After you zeroed in on your target companies, contact the companies which are hiring the people with the skills set that you possess. If you get to know who among your networking in working there, then you should also contact them. Are they a first degree contact or second or third? Get in touch with them through your friend or a person in your network and pass on your resume.

Once on the LinkedIn you should also pay attention to how to grow your network fast. This you can do by taking the following steps.

Have a complete LinkedIn profile.
Get as many co-workers, ex-colleagues and friends into your network
Start Groups
Join Groups
Create Polls
Join Discussions
Interact through Questions & Answers
Find out who on your GTalk, Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger may be on Linked In and add them up.

The next thing that you should do is customize your URL (uniform resource locator), which is the address of your LinkedIn page on the Web, to driver it further toward the top of a Google search on your name.

Do remember to add websites that showcase your work or pictures. This is especially good for people in the designing or photography business as the opportunity to include a link to a personal website, will boost your chances of getting selected.

As a rule of thumb, do remember to accept the invitations that you get everyday. Most of time it would be of people who want to get in touch with you because of your profession. When you send a request, always override the canned “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn,” and write a personal note, even if it’s a brief, “hey, want to connect?” Better yet, put a few minutes of effort into your request. No one likes to receive a form letter.
