Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Case is probably one of the best iPad Mini cases around. It comes natural to the iPad Mini as it delivers a comfortable typing experience and beautiful looks.
It’s a single, solid slab whose entire back is anodised aluminium, and looks like the back of the iPad. If you'd like to customize your Ultrathin, Logitech provides free laser engraving if you order the keyboard from its online store. The Bluetooth keyboard attached via magnets built into the iPad, and is .31 inch thin and weighs just 11.6 ounce. The case also has managements on its right side to turn on and off the iPad 2 or iPad 3.
It is easy to connect the keyboard case and the iPad Mini. To do so, you need to click dedicated Bluetooth button on the right side of the keyboard. The device will then come up in iOS Setting’s easy-to-use Bluetooth menu. Just like it is easy to connect the device, it is also easy to disconnect it. If you turn off the Keyboard cover with its dedicated power slider, the keyboard will disconnect, and the iPad’s touch-screen keyboard will function normally.
The keyboard itself uses a traditional typing layout, with sensible space allocated for each key. The case also has a series of dedicated iPad function keys. You need to click “fn” simultaneously with 0-9 digit keys to activate corresponding special functions. At the top of the keyboard, there’s a home button (double click for multitasking), lock button, Siri button, a keyboard language selection key, a key to open the touch keyboard, a button to open the iPad’s lock screen slideshow feature, and media playback controls.
The Logitech keyboard allows for quick cut/copy/paste with the command + x/c/v keys, which is similar to a desktop PC’s keyboard.
In terms of typing, although it may take some time to get use to typing on the keyboard, it is definitely faster and easier to use than the iPad mini’s touch keyboard. The keys are good and makes a typing a pleasurable experience.
The case resembles an Apple Smart cover in terms of size and resemblance. Like the Smart Cover, the iPad mini’s display will turn on when you flip open the keyboard. It offers good protection for the front of your iPad mini while it stays on.
You can charge the case via a mini-USB cable. The Logitech keyboard has good battery life, and says it offers three months of usage (on a single charge) out of the iPad mini model.
However, one lose point is that you can’t change the angle at which your iPad is standing because it is fixed to the angle of the slot on the keyboard. If you can stand a little more thickness and weight, you might want to look at Logitech's Solar Keyboard Folio ($129.99). It's adjustable to a variety of angles and never needs to be plugged in.
Overall, it is well designed keyboard accessory which is thin, light and easy to set up. It has got great aesthetics and preserves the minimal Apple aesthetic.
The new cover is available in black and white, and offers life over a bluetooth range of up to 10 meters. Logitech says it expects the Ultrathin Keyboard mini to be available in the U.S. and Europe from this month, with a suggested retail price of $79.99.
