Indian govt to bring down price of world’s cheapest tablet to Rs 1500 ($28)

The Indian government has asked the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), partner in the Aakash tablet project, to bring the price of the world’s cheapest tablet, to Rs 1,500. The government is procuring the tablet from DataWind at a price of Rs 2,263 per unit and plans to distribute it to Indian students at a concessional price of Rs 1,500 per unit.


“Let us take that Aakash to the people of this country for a sum of Rs 1,500. Each student must have a Aakash in his/her hand so that they can see the world with it,” India’s Telecom and IT minister Kapil Sibal, said.

The minister said the idea is to bring the cutting edge technology at highly affordable price.

The tablet was unveiled by the Indian president Pranab Mukherjee last year. The tablet’s retail version is selling under the name UbiSlate 7Ci for a price of Rs 4,499.

The Aakash 2 is a 7-inch tablet that offers display of 480x800 pixel resolution. This screen is capable of supporting 4-point multi-touch. The tablet draws is processing speed from a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 mobile processor and 512 MB RAM. Akash 2 operates on the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and has a front facing VGA camera to click images or initiate video chat. There is a 3.5 mm audio port to enjoy music. The battery of the tablet lasts up to three hours during the usage.

It mat be remembered that the first version of the tablet was plagued by several factors including device quality and delays in availability. The second version generated a lot of buzz among the students and professionals in the country as they hope that will get an adorable tablet at such a low price.
