PC major Hewlett-Packard has launched its premium launched in India its business tablet priced at Rs 43,500.

The ElitePad looks similar to HP’s consumer Windows 8 tablet, the Envy X2, but is a little smaller, with a 16:10 aspect ratio 10.1” 1280 x 800 screen.

Powered by Intel’s latest Atom Z2760 processor, the ElitePad 900 has a sturdy machined aluminum design, sports a bright 400-nit Gorilla Glass 2 screen and lots of security features.

It is a surprisingly light tablet, a 1.5 lbs and only 9.2mm thick, and meets Mil-spec levels of durability, befitting its HP premium business “Elite” series heritage.

The tablet runs on Microsoft’s latest OS Windows 8 Pro. Under the hood, the tablet has a 1.8GHz Intel Dual Core Atom (Z2760) processor along with 2GB of RAM, and the fast bootup times promised by the 64GB SSD. The ElitePad 900 sports a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1280x800 pixel. It has an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a full HD camera in the front, when compared to the 720p cameras that adorn the front and back of the Surface Pro.

Since HP is marketing the ElitePad 900 as a “business tablet,” the weight of the tablet has been kept at just under 0.6 kgs along with a mere 0.36 inches of thickness.

The biggest advantage the HP ElitePad 900 has over the Surface Pro is the fact that it is currently available through official channels in India. The Surface Pro retails for $900 for the 64GB version, which roughly comes out to anything between Rs. 48,000 – Rs. 51,000, depending on the dollar rate. Even if you do decide to get the Surface from the US, besides costing just a tad more than the ElitePad 900, you would also not be eligible for any warranty or tech support in India. If peace of mind is something you value a lot, the ElitePad 900 is definitely a much better option as it will come with HP’s standard 1-year warranty.

The ElitePad 900 comes with 2GB of memory, a 64GB SSD for primary storage, dual band Wi-Fi, optional 4G WWAN radio, and optional capacitive pen/stylus support.
