Why should I purchase an iPad Mini? 5 reasons to justify it

By: iPadfanzz staff on March 8, 2013

So you need an iPad Mini, right? You always wanted a portable tablet for work and home, but could not trust the bigger 10” tablets since they are too heavy to carry everywhere around with you. The best option is of course an iPad Mini, which is an iPad but in small size. That too a bit inexpensive! Here’s our top five reasons to purchase an iPad Mini.

Portability

The iPad Mini offers a great degree of mobility, fitting into a woman's purse or sliding into the side pocket of a backpack. It is also much easier to hold and operate with one hand, giving you a hand free and much more freedom to walk-and-use.

Great Specs

The basic technical specifications of the Mini come between the iPad 2 and the retina screen iPad. The tablet comes with a screen measuring 7.9 inches and 1024 by 768 pixels and weighs just .68 pounds. For comparison, the iPad 2 is 9.5 x 7.3 inches and 1.33 pounds. Further the Mini packs 163ppi (pixels per inch) versus 132ppi for the iPad 2. (The higher the ppi the clearer and more crisp the screen).

The Mini has better cameras. The front-facing FaceTime camera now does HD video. The rear camera can take the same high-resolution 5-megapixel photos as the iPhone 5. The speakers on the iPad Mini are also improved delivering much louder and clearer sound quality.

Apple has also put its new smaller lightning connector on the Mini which replaces the earlier rectangular dock connector. The biggest drawback to the lightning is the need to purchase dock-to-lighting adapters ($29) for existing peripherals like speakers.

An iPad mini with 4G LTE service can also serve as a GPS device (Wi-Fi-only iPads don’t include GPS technology). In addition, the screen is good for viewing maps, especially when driving.

As an ebook and digital magazine reader

It is a good and versatile e-reader on a tablet computer. In case you only want to read e-books and require a tablet for that, then you can opt for a traditional e-ink Kindle Paperwhite or Nook Glow for battery life, weight and the readability of text. However, if you want to read all sorts of stuff -- magazines or daily newspapers or comics -- step up to the iPad Mini. The good part about the Mini is that you can hold it one hand for an extended period of time because of its small size and weight. The Mini offers more e-reader options than other small tablets.

Combined with iPad Mini, the New York Times custom app is fantasti, as it will give the best digital news reading experience ever. IT must be remembered that custom magazine apps available on iTunes for the iPad are superior to what is found on Android-based devices like the Nook and Kindle.  Other great magazines with outstanding digital apps are The New Yorker and The Economist.

The iPad Mini is also good for handling PDF files, either in Apple’s own iBooks program or a stand-alone app. The tablet will also serve well as digital comics reader, but the experience of reading them on tablet computers has been mixed.

Multimedia consumption

The small screen of the iPad Mini isn’t bad when it comes to watch videos. Though the 4:3 ratio means that precious space is eaten up with black letterboxing bars, you’ll enjoy both movies and videos.
If watching videos is your primary focus and portability isn’t a concern, the full-size iPad is probably the best choice.

The tablet is also good when it comes to gaming as the size of the tablet doesn’t give the feelings that gaming is cramped. Though the graphics may not be as good as the iPad 3, the 1024x768 resolution on a 7.9-inch display actually turns out to have a higher dots-per-inch ratio than the original iPad or iPad 2.

Apps Store

In January, Apple announced that it had reached 40 billion downloads and 775,000 total apps in the iOS App Store. The App Store has been growing by about 641 apps per day – or 19,230 apps per 30 days. Buying an iPad Mini would give you access to the iOS App Store which is great if you look at the fact that all the digital media and gaming companies have apps on the App Store. For you information, if you already have an iPad, and have invested a lot of money in buying apps, then you can reload those apps in your iPad Mini for free. Clearly, when it comes to the absolute volume of available apps, the iPad mini and the Nexus 7 handily beat the Kindle Fire HD. But if you're buying a Kindle Fire HD, you're probably not buying it for the app store.
