LG has announced the arrival of its 55-inch OLED television set in the UK. The company showed off the television set a year back and just as it begins shipping the units to Korea and the US, it announced its plans for the UK market too.

The 55EM9700 model has an ultra-thin frame and high contrast screen, and is available for £9,999, with delivery expected in July.

The new TV uses organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which is more energy efficient and gives better picture quality than LCD and plasma-based TVs. It has a thickness of 0.16 inches and weighs less than 10 kilograms. The television’s OLED screen offers a screen resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, which produces vivid and realistics pictures thanks to its WRGB technology.

The Four-Colour Pixel system features a white sub-pixel that works with the conventional red, blue and green setup to create a superior colour mix.

LG has also fitted the set with a Colour Refiner and infinite contrast ratio, which maintains the optimum contrast levels regardless of ambient brightness or the viewing angle.

DisplaySearch expects the market for OLED TVs to be around 7.2 million units by 2016. Samsung has also unveiled a 55-inch OLED market, but LG is the first to market.
