Sony has officially announced the launch of its new mid-range Xperia smartphones, the Xperia SP and Xperia L, both of which run the Android 4.1 version of Jelly Bean.

The better among the two is Xperia SP comes with a 4.6-inch, 720p HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, an 8-megapixel camera, a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon processor, LTE connectivity support along with 3G and Wi-Fi, VGA front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage (plus a microSD memory card slot).

On the other hand, the Xperia L has a Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core processor, clocked at 1Ghz. It has 8GB of internal storage expandable up to 32GB via miroSD card. The rear and front cameras are the same at the Xperia SP but unlike the SP which supports 1080p HD video recording, the Xperia L supports 720p HD video recording. The device has NFC.

While the Xperia XP’s 4.6-inch screen offers resolution of 1280x720 pixel display, with a pixel density of 319 pixels-per-inch (ppi), the lower-end model, the Xperia L, has a 4.3-inch FWVGA (854x480 pixels) resolution display at 228ppi.

Both the smartphones offer an alternative to Sony’s flagship, the Xperia Z.  With these models Sony is going aggressive on high-end Android models which now have a much cleaner UI, up-to-date Android update and fast Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. Sony is fast becoming a player to reckon with.
