Yahoo has shed the title of being a ‘digital media company’ as it has made official that it is now a technology company.
While issuing its annual 10-K report to the Securities And Exchange Commission, Yahoo described itself a ‘global technology company.’
“Yahoo is now labeling itself first and foremost as a “global technology company,” in the place where it used to call itself a “digital media company.”
Yahoo is also believed to be beefing up technology offerings and streamlining its media products to improve its game against industry titans like Google, Apple and Facebook.
A small but significant change as its Chief Executive Marissa Mayer, the former Google executive, prepares to revive the struggling Internet pioneer's fortunes.
However, it must be known that small technology companies develop and sell technologies, such as databases (Oracle), microprocessors (Intel), software as a service (Salesforce.com). So it may make you wonder what technology is Yahoo going to offer. However, a better description Yahoo! would be as a "technology media company" since it uses media technologies to publish digital content and advertising.
Facebook is a media company, so is Google, Twitter, and hundreds of Silicon Valley companies.
Earlier in December, Yahoo acquired video chat start-up OnTheAir as part of its focus on mobile applications and services, which is indicative of its shift towards new technology. Also, at an earnings teleconference, Mayer identified new products and mobile investments as among several strategies aimed at keeping the company relevant as it tries to compete against other companies.
