Samsung has strengthened its budget smartphone range in India. The company has launched two new smartphones – Galaxy Young and Galaxy Y Plus – for Rs 8290 and Rs 6290, respectively.

The first is Samung Galaxy Young which looks almost indistinguishable from other Samsung smartphones. It has a compact, curved frame and has been designed with an ergonomic style and provides a comfortable grip. Beyond its chic design, the 3.27-inch Young comes with full touch HVGA resolution screen which makes viewing photos, messages and multimedia clear and detailed. The handset measures 58.6x109.4x12.5 mm and weighs 112 grams.

The front and back of the phone are decked out in glossy white plastic with the sides coming in silver. Available in white, deep blue, wine red and metallic silver colour schemes, the Samsung Galaxy Young runs Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, with the TouchWiz UI laid on top. It’s a stripped-back version of the interface, made for lower-end devices, but maintains the same look you’ll see in phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3. Although, navigation of the UI isn’t completely lag-free, this is a phone not designed for a top-end user. It’s for the lower-end user that wants to do little more than check Facebook, make calls, send texts and play the odd game of Angry Birds.

It has a 3 megapixel camera and a 1,300mAh battery that is said to provide a talk time of up to 400 minutes. The Galaxy Young specs sheet includes 768MB of RAM and 4GB of integrated storage feature. The latter can be expanded up to 64GB via microSD card inclusion. The smartphones sports a single, 3-megapixel camera which is quite okay for taking routine photographs. Completing the specs, the Galaxy Young features list, a 1300mAh Lithium Ion battery that is said to provide a talk time of up to 400 minutes alongside the standard collection of Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity options.

At the same time the company also launched Samsung Galaxy Y Plus GT-S5303 which is available through various online retailers such as Snapdeal, Infibeam and Flipkart for Rs. 6,290. Measuring in at 104.9 x 57.9 x 12.98mm and weighing 96 grams, the Galaxy Y Plus sports a 2.8-inch TFT QVGA (240x320 pixels) display and runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It also comes with a 2-megapixel rear camera. The smartphone is powered by a 850MHz processor and has 4GB of internal storage and microSD card slot for up to 32GB expansion. It comes with a 1,200mAh battery and Micro-USB port. Connectivity wise, the device has Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS, EDGE, AGPS and Glonass.
