Toshiba launches three tablets Excite Pure, Excite Pro and Excite Write, price starting at $299

Toshiba has launches three new tablets at the Computex 2013, that promise something for tablet enthusiasts.

All the three tablet share the same aesthetics (looking like the first-gen iPad), the same plastic design, 10-inch form factor, ports and Android 4.2 OS, but each offering something different on the inside. They’re also not the thinnest tablets around – 10.5mm thick for the Pro and Write, 10.2mm for the Pure – with weight hovering at the 600g mark for the Pure and 632g for the Pro/Write.

Toshiba Pure

The Pure is the cheapest of the trio – $299.99/£249.99. At first glance, the Pure looks very similar to Toshiba's AT300se tablet. It is 10.2mm thick, marginally lighter, but has a 600g weight still makes it feel quite substantial to hold. The Pure has a 10.1in screen with Gorilla Glass 1 offering a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels. The tablet is powered by a Tegr 3 SoC,and has a microSD slot, 16GB or 32GB isn't really a hard limit.

The connections are all on the left hand side of the tablet. It offers a headphone jack and the volume control, a microUSB port and a plastic flap that conceals a microSD card slot and a micro HDMI output. The Excite Pure offers a 3-megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.2-megapixel camera on the front for video chat. However, with a much more powerful Nexus 10 just $100 bucks away, it remains to be seen whether the Pure will be worth its $300 (16GB) price.

Toshia Excite Pro

The high-end tablets Excite Pro and Write have nearly the identical specs and designs. But with a Wacom digitizer inside, the Write will serve as a direct competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. The Write comes with a stylus which Toshiba purports will sense 1,024 degrees of writing pressure.

The Excite Pro has large bezel and a plastic textured rear cover which is nothing to get excited about. The Excite Pro's 'PixelPure' screen matches the Nexus 10 with an impressive resolution of 2560x1600, beating even the iPad 4's Retina display.

The Excite Pro is among the first to employ Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor, a quad-core chip with an extra battery saving core. This along with 2GB of RAM give smooth gaming experience. There's a standard 16GB of internal storage with the option to expand the memory to 64GB.Connectivity options include microUSB, Micro-HDMI, 11.ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 3G/4G/LTE network support. The only major thing missing is NFC.

The Pro offers 8Mp camera at the rear and 1.2 Mp at the front. The Excite Pro has stereo Harman Kardon speakers but these are disappointingly positioned on the rear of the tablet. The Tegra 4 chip allows the tablet to offer an HDR shooting mode. The Excite Pro price is £349, just a shade less than a 16GB iPad 4, although like the Pure it has miniture SD, USB and HDMI ports for enhanced connectivity.

Toshia Excite Write

The Excite Write has the same textured dot pattern on the rear of the tablet which gives the tablet a good amount of grip, but it's slightly thicker and heavier than its entry-level cousin, standing at 10.5mm thick and weighing 632g.

The 10.1in display of Excite Write offers a massive 2,560x1,600 resolution and everything looked razor sharp be it movie watching, web browsing, or playing apps. The Excite Write is protected by Gorilla Glass 2. The tablet comes with a Bluetooth keyboard that doubles up as a carry case and protective cover.

The Excite Pure is powered by Nvidia's latest Tegra 4 processor and has 2GB of RAM. The tablet is snappy in web-browsing and gaming. The Excite Write comes with a digitizer stylus pen, which lets you take notes using the touchscreen. Toshiba has also developed its own TruNote note-taking app to go with it and this is meant to be able to convert your handwriting into typed text. The pen is smooth and responsive. The Excite Write and Excite Pro will also launch on June 25 and will cost $599.99 and $499.99, respectively.
