Playboy launches its new iPhone app, sans nudity

Playboy, which is probably the oldest and the most popular adult magazine, has released its iOS app, sans nudity.

But you may wonder what will you get instead? The app brings "best articles" from the latest issue of Playboy, original lifestyle content and "non-nude" pictorials.

"As the on-the-go extension of the Playboy brand, our new app brings the best of Playboy with original, thought-provoking and enticing bite-sized content that captures our design-driven and discernible style," said Scott Flanders, CEO of Playboy Enterprises.

For instance, the current content on the app includes an interview with music businessman Clive Davis and a twenty question style interview with Girls creator/actress Lena Dunham.

The app costs $1.99 a month, $10.99 for six months, or $19.99 for a full year's one-handed viewing.

Hugh Heffner, the grand old man of grumble mags, once promised that the company would release an iOS app that featured the fully monty, but witnessed stiff resistance form Steve Jobs.

As it is known Apple follows strict third-party guidelines. Recently the tech giant removed the popular photo app 500px when there were reports of nudity in pornography.

“We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone,” Jobs had said earlier in an email.

The app will soon be available to Android users.

Those looking for uncensored Playboy issues on the go can go over to i.playboy.com, where Playboy offers a web-based iPad app. However, it remains to be seen how Playboy Enterprises can convince people to pay for non-pornographic content. While the magazine is trying to sell the content for "Gen Y fans," reading Playboy strictly for the articles sounds like something their dads would do.
