Due to iPad boom, Gartner lowers 2011 global PC growth projection

Apple’s highly popular iPad 2 as well as other tablets in the markets are causing consumers to delay laptop purchase decisions, research firm Gartner said while downgrading PC shipment projections.

Gartner now expects PC shipments to grow 9.3 per cent in 2011, reaching 385 million units, as compared to the earlier figure of 10.5 per cent.

Recently, Apple’s senior VP of iPhone Software Scott Forstall, said at the Worldwide Developers Conference, that 25 million iPads have been sold over the past 14 months. In simpler terms, Apple sold 87,000 iPads for every day in those 14 months.

Gartner said consumers have lost interest in netbooks - or "mini-notebooks," but they see fewer reasons to replace their desktop and laptop PCs.

PCs are transitioning from a one-size-fits-all computing platform to a more-specialized device, prized for its ability to complement other devices, Gartner said.

"The PC market is experiencing dramatic structural changes. Moving forward, PCs will no longer be a market by themselves, but part of a larger device market that ranges from smart televisions to the most-basic-feature phones. Within this market, consumers and professionals will increasingly use the combination of devices that best suits their particular needs," it said.

However, Gartner’s study is in contrast with the one from chip giant Intel, which expects PC unit shipments to grow 11 per cent this year.

How to connect your iPad to Wi-Fi networks

It is quite easy to connect your iPad to a Wi-Fi network so that you can enjoy the Internet facility. iPadfanzz.blogspot.com shows you how you connect your next generation iPad to a Wi-Fi network in few simple steps. You can connect to Wi-Fi, a high-speed wireless networking connection, in your office, home or restaurants.

Step 1. Start you iPad and go to homescreen. Now tap the Settings app.

Step 2. Tapping the app will open the General Settings page. On the top left hand corner of the page you can view the Wi-Fi section.

Step 3. To get your iPad to begin scanning the available wireless networks, tap the Wi-Fi button and then slide the slider to "on". Immediately you will see a list of all the networks near you, whether they're public or private. In case it does not find anything, it will pause for about a minute and then again start the search.

Step 4. Once you see the list of all the Wi-Fi networks available near you, it is upto you to connect to any network you like, which can be done with just a tap. Keep in mind that private networks have a lock icon next to them but Public don’t. Just next to the lock icon there are bars which indicates the strength of the connection – the greater the number of bars means a faster connection. Connecting through a public connection means you’re online.

Step 5. To access private connections, you’ll need a password. And if you’ve got the right password, I hope you’ll get it right the first time, enter it in the required network and then tap the join button. After your iPad gets connected to a wireless network, you will see the word iPad with the Wi-Fi symbol next to it. Now you can use any app that required Wi-Fi connectivity.

Pizza Hut launches iPad, Android apps

Pizza Hut has finally released its new iPad and Android apps for ordering up pizzas.

The best part about these apps is that they let you order from the full menu on the go, right from the comfort of your phone or iPad.

The app makes it easy for you to select your pizza and toppings with the help of a graphical user interface, so you can see what your order will look like virtually before you confirm it. For your convenience all orders are saved to your account for easy re-ordering.

In the Most Popular items section, you can quickly access all of your Pizza Hut favorites. Moreover, you can also easily check out, as you can add credit card options without having to create an account. The app is free to download from the Android Market, but as of now, it is for US customers.

“The functionality of the app is similar to the iPhone, with tilting, dragging and dropping, and ease of use,” the company said in a statement. “With such wide range of digital platforms like the iPad, iPhone and Android, we now have  more points of access than our peers and it makes us one of the most accessible brands."

Pizza Hut sees the mobile space fueling its growth within the coming period due to the fact that the rate at which people are adopting the devices are phenomenal.

Interactive iPad 2 replaces cardboard placeholders in an Australian store

Apple gave a new look to its stores in Down Under by replacing traditional cardboard placeholders with  super-interactive iPad 2s for easy viewing of the customers.

The store’s makeover comes at a time when the Cupertino-based company is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the opening of the first Apple Retail store.

The Australian stores, which have undergone a number of changes overnight, now use the iPads to view features of a product, for comparison between models and allowing users to call over a staff member for assistance.

Charlie Sheen's mind now an app

Troubled Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen now has his own mobile application.

The app, called “The MaSheen”, which is now available for iPhone, iPad, and the iPod Touch, is being dubbed as "the mind of Charlie Sheen in your pocket."

The MaSheen features 17 short videos, a fortune teller and games. To use the digital fortune teller, just think of a question and ask it out loud to your device, now shake your iPhone or iPad around, and your fortune will appear clenched within the jaws of a tiger.

"Great news, world; my new app is finally up and running. it's epic! #MaSheen the others are ALL FAKE! this one I designed. your welcome," Sheen twitted.

Apple gave final approval to the App on April 15 allowing Sheen to add content anytime in the MaSheen app, which will cost $2.99.

It’s an interesting and creative way adopted by Charlie Sheen to reach his public without tweeting. But it is now up to them how they take it.

iPad 2 now available in India at HomeShop18 website for Rs 34,900

Popular Indian home shopping website, HomeShop18, has some good news for all diehard fans of iPad and its newer version. Apple's much anticipated Jesus Tablet, the iPad 2, which is yet to be launched in India, is up for grabs on this site for Rs 34,900.

Following the successful launch of the tablet in the US market on March 11, the company unveiled the device simultaneously in 25 countries on March 22. The second-generation iPad has been a runaway hit among masses and classes worldwide due to its unique and innovative features; analysts estimated that roughly 500,000 units flew off US stores shelves in its first weekend, temporarily driving wait times up to five weeks.

Research firm IDC forecasts that 44.6 million media tablets will ship worldwide in 2011, with the US representing nearly 40 per cent of the total. Analysts expect Apple to maintain a 70 to 80 per cent share of the market, which equates to 31.2 million to 35.7 million units for the entire year, or between 2.6 million and 2.7 million iPad shipments per month.

Apple has yet not confirmed the launch date of iPad in the Indian market but people have been seen ordering the device on popular online shopping websites.

The newer version of iPad is slimmer, lighter and very powerful. It comes with a dual core A5 processor which, according to Apple, doubles the device's speed and graphic display by nine times. The device comes with a whole set of new features including a front mounted camera for video calls as well as a multi-purpose Smart Cover that automatically switches the device on and off as well as acting as a stand.

The gadget comes with two built-in cameras, a front one and a rear one, for use with FaceTime video chat and other apps. FaceTime can be used between two iPad 2s, between the iPad 2 and an iPhone or iPod touch, or between an iPad 2 and a Mac. The iPad 2’s front camera can record VGA-resolution (640-by-480) video at 30 frames per second with audio and the back camera can record HD video at 720p at 30 frames per second with audio. Just like the original iPad, the newer version features a 9.7-inch LCD screen with a 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch. Other features include Gyroscope, capacitive touchscreen, iOS 4.3 + FaceTime & PhotoBooth and long battery life.

Foxconn mulls $12 billion investment into Brazil to make iPads

Taiwan IT giant Foxconn, which makes iPads and iPhones, is considering investing $12 billion investment in Brazil to build computer and mobile phone components, according to reports in media.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said that Foxconn had expressed its interest in investing the money in Brazil over the next "five to six years".

Rousseff said a working group had been formed to study the proposal. The discussions between Brazilian officials and Foxconn about a potential partnership have been going on for a while now.

Taipei-based Foxconn, which is facing labour problems and suicides in China in recent years, is the world's largest maker of computer components and produces goods for Apple, Sony and Nokia. It currently has around one million workers in China, about half of them based in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen, which neighbours Hong Kong.

Foxconn's investment in Brazil would be a big boost to the world's eighth-largest economy, and would advance Rousseff's goal of attracting more high-tech manufacturing.

Apple Inc recently launched the next version of its popular computer tablet, the iPad, and is witnessing huge demand for the new product. According to estimates, Apple sold nearly half a million units in that first weekend in the US when wait time for the device soared to five weeks. The iPad 2 was launched simultaneously in 25 additional countries on March 25, and it's reportedly already sold out overseas.



The report of Foxcoon’s mega investment should be seen as a big boost to Apple’s production line and when the Brazilian plant becomes operational, Apple would considerably reduce the supply-demand mismatch.

How to lock the screen orientation in iPad 2

As you may be aware that on upgrading the latest iOS release on your iPad, the screen orientation doesn’t work anymore. iPadfanzz tells you how to lock your screen's rotation using a few easy clicks.

Step 1. From any iPad screen or application, double click on the big home button on the bottom of the iPad.

Step 2. At the bottom menu a new task switcher will appear. Slide your finger over to the right to access the new screen hidden on the left.

Step 3. On opening the new screen, click the lock symbol on the bottom left-hand side of the screen, and it will lock.

Now, it won't change orientation if you turn the Apple iPad. Repeat this step to unlock the orientation. This process works in portrait or landscape orientation.

Double click any class in Day or Week View to see/change its details. This does not work for iCal events so far though.

Right click any class in Day View to see contextual menu.

In Day View use three fingers swipe gesture to the right or left to get to the next or previous day respectively.

When in Planner press Delete (Backspace) key on your keyboard to delete selected Classes, Courses or Semesters. IMPORTANT: there is no undo for this action so far.

Drag & drop an instructor from Instructors pane to any Class in Planner to assign such instructor to that Class.

Apple investigating Verizon iPad 2 connection problem

Apple in a statement has said that it is looking into connectivity issues with the Verizon network that owners of the iPad 2 3G are experiencing.

The statement from the company comes in wake of mounting number of complaints on Apple support discussions board with users reporting trouble connecting to the Verizon data network with their iPad 2 3Gs, especially after turning 3G service off and back on.

The iPad 2 was launched last month with three models: WiFi only, WiFi and AT&T-compatible 3G, and WiFi and Verizon-compatible 3G.

What’s the problem exactly: If the iPad’s Verizon connection is switched off, the tablet needs to be rebooted to connect it again. This glitch only affects the Verizon connection; the Wi-Fi connection isn't affected.

However, AT&T customers are not experiencing this connectivity problem.

Now watch ESPN channels on iOS-based devices

iPad and iPhone users will now be able to watch Walt Disney’s ESPN live on their devices.

ESPN said it has made available its flagship cable sports network live on Apple’s mobile devices for subscribers to pay-TV service from Time Warner Cable, Verizon Communications and Bright House Networks.

To watch ESPN channels you have to download the free software from Apple's App Store and view ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com on Web-connected iPad, iPhone or iPod. That too without commercials!

The move by ESPN comes after Cablevision Systems and Time Warner Cable recently launched their own free iPad apps that provide live cable TV programming to their video customers on the iPad tablet.

ESPN is the most-watched sports channel in the United States. It broadcasts a wide variety of sporting events, ranging from major sports playoffs to lumberjack contests and poker.

The recent spate by the mainstream US television media is an effort to take its business model right to the digital media which holds great potential for the future since a lot of users have now started using online videos and are embracing new media devices with enthusiasm.

"We're always innovating at ESPN, but this is re-energizing the company in terms of things we can do by exploiting technology to serve sports fans, which is our mission," said Sean Bratches, ESPN's executive vice president of sales and marketing. "This is where the marketplace is heading."

Users must enter their cable subscriber credentials after downloading the free software to access the ESPN channels. A version optimized for the iPad will be released in May, the company said. ESPN said it plans to make the software available on other phones and tablets “in the near future.’’

“This is a natural evolution,” Richard Greenfield, an analyst at BTIG LLC in New York said. “It shows the complexity of a world that relies on living-room viewing transitioning to one where people watch television anywhere and everywhere.”

ESPN’s ad revenue from online and mobile viewing is expected to grow from the current levels and add to the network’s total revenue.

Apple’s iPad 2 tops Consumer Reports’ tablet ratings

The American magazine Consumer Reports have released their tablet ratings, and found that the iPad 2 handily beats its rivals in nearly every category.

Consumer Reports tested tablets from Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, and ViewSonic, as well as several models from Apple. All tablets (10 in total) were evaluated on 17 different criteria, including touch-screen responsiveness, versatility, portability, screen glare, battery life and overall ease of use, and testers found several models that outperformed the rest.

The Apple iPad 2 with Wi-Fi plus 3G (32G), costing $730, topped the Ratings, scoring Excellent in nearly every category. The original iPad too scored very high and beat most of the models but tied with the Motorola Xoom, $800.

When it comes to “versatility,” which Consumer Reports defines as “the presence of useful features,” the new generation iPad scored the second highest rating of “Very Good.”

In terms of battery life, Consumer Reports said while the iPad 2 boasts the longest battery life — 12.2 hours — the Archos 70 Internet Tablet could last for a mere 3.8 hours.

But the tests suggest that the Motorola Xoom comes in close to the iPad 2′s as its chief rival. The Xoom tablet adds conveniences that the iPad lacks, including a built-in memory card reader and support for the Flash videos and animations found on many Web sites.

“So far, Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced,” said Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor at Consumer Reports. “However, it’s likely we’ll see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the market.”

Before choosing a tablet, Consumer Reports recommends that consumers consider the following:

Many features are almost universal. Easy-to-use touch screens based on capacitive technology are now widely available. All the models Consumer Reports tested feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a front-facing webcam, and GPS capability. Android-based models can be expanded using built-in USB ports or slots for SD flash-memory cards, but the iPad 2 lacks both.

You get what you pay for. With prices for the best tablets still too high for many budgets, consumers may be tempted by lower-priced competitors. Don’t be, says Consumer Reports, whose tests have found the performance of models costing $300 and under to be at best mediocre. Buying a tablet with a data plan may lower the initial cost of the device, but cancelling early may result in a stiff penalty. Otherwise, it might be cheaper to buy a 3G-capable model without a contract.

Future-proofing will pay off. Hardware specifications don’t tell the whole story. Portability, storage capacity, and weight are important. But less obvious differences in software, connectivity, and upgradability are critical too. And with faster 4G data networks becoming more widely available, 4G capability (or at least the ability to upgrade to it) is also a plus.

Madrid based firm known as Pad in the City will rent you a 3G iPad for €39 ($55) per day, with unlimited data and a bunch of handy travel apps preinstalled.

How it works: Before travelling to the country all you have to do is reserve the iPad. So when you arrive at your hotel, apartment, airport, a courier will hand-deliver the iPad to you. On showing your ID, €500 deposit will be blocked on your credit car and the tablet will be handed over to you. There are so many apps (Like offline maps, subscriptions to the WSJ, weather, games, the Lonely Planet Guide to Madrid, car rental apps, a metro map) to choose from.

Well, we hope the idea soon gets publicity and is made available in other countries too.

iPad 2 shipping time improves to 2-3 weeks

There’s some good news for all iPad lovers who’re eagerly awaiting for the Apple’s Jesus tablet, the iPad 2! Apple has announced that the estimated shipping time of iPad 2 has improved from 3-4 weeks earlier to 2-3 weeks today.

This shipping should apply to all those countries where the iPad 2 can be currently shipped.

The news comes despite the fact that the disaster in Japan has largely affected the manufacturing of polymer batteries to a large extent. The iPad 2’s new, more durable screen glass is also probably supplied by a high-tech Japanese glassmaker. It’s difficult for Apple to find an alternative supplier for several of the the iPad’s Japanese components.

Apple has experienced unprecendented demand for the iPad 2 since it first went on sale in the U.S. in March. A glimpse of the popularity of iPad: Nearly 12,000 iPads were sold on eBay within the first two weeks of the iPad 2 ‘s launch.

Apple has already released its first iPad 2 commercial titled “we believe” and improvement in online orders indicates that the company has found a way to meet the demands of its customers.

Today’s app review: Cannibal Bunnies

Creative Drops Studios’ iPad game Cannibal Bunnies ($1.99) is a fun and creative app.

This time management puzzler requires you to work hard both strategically and with fast fingers. In this game, the destiny of the pink bunnies is in your hands. Users are required to use their agility, speed and logic to grab the cute pink bunnies and put them in protective cages before they either fall off a cliff or get eaten by hungry cannibal bunnies.

Users will have to keep an eye on the red bunnies because they will not only eat the other rabbits but will pull dirty tricks like rolling boulders at them in an effort to wipe them out.

The game has got great artwork supplemented by visually pleasing graphics. The game play takes place across four different worlds so the scenery is always fresh. Cannibal Bunnies features 45 levels spread in three different worlds and one bonus level for the experts who have defied the evil and rescued the complete population of bunnies.

But on the flip side, there is no button to easily return to the main menu when in the middle of game play. This means you’ll have to finish or fail a level before you can go back.

Overall, the game has high replay value which makes it a fun app that can keep you busy for hours.
