By: Aseem Gaurav on June 2, 2011

Shaquille O'Neal announced about his retirement on Twitter on Wednesday.

The former LSU star, who turned 39 in March, twitted: "We did it. 19 years baby. I want to thank you very much. That's why I'm telling YOU first. I'm about to retire. Love you. Talk to you soon."

One of the most charismatic players in NBA history, O'Neal has played for six pro teams - Orlando, the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami, Cleveland, Phoenix and Boston.

Shaq, who has 3.8 million followers, retires after a 19-year career in which he won four NBA titles and the 2000 league Most Valuable Player award.

It is quite amazing to see how celebrities are using social networking streams to make announcements, which in fact are helping these mediums to grow at a much larger pace.
