Android Ice Cream Sandwich is now on 1 in 10 Android devices

The latest Dashboard numbers for that Google’s latest operating system Ice cream Sandwich show that it is now present on over 10 per cent of devices within its mobile ecosystem. These numbers are based on Android devices that have accessed the Google Play Store in the 14-day period ending on July 2, 2012.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich achieved this figure within nine months flat. As per the data, Gingerbread (Android 2.3) came first with a 64 per cent install base; followed by Froyo (Android 2.2) with 17.3 per cent and ICS with 10.6 per cent.

The rise is mostly coming from the growing sales of all the new 4.0 Android powered devices, such as the HTC One X, One S and One V, along with Samsung Galaxy S III.

Google is frequently criticised for the fragmentation of Android and it has become a hard to manage issue for the company. It is because unlike Apple one time update for all devices, Google has to rely on device makers to push out updates, which many are afraid to do so. Google hopes that Android 4.0 and beyond will possibly help prevent fragmentation in the future, since it has much stricter hardware guidelines.
