Facebook adds same-sex marriage status and icons

By: Aseem Gaurav on July 4, 2012

Facebook has made it official for gay and lesbian couples to show their weddings by rolling out two new marriage icons reflecting two male or female figures.

And the first one to use the new icons were none other than Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and his long time boyfriend Sean Eldridge.

Prior to this, if a person has to announce his/her marriage on Facebook, they do so under the icon of a little bride and little groom "cake topper"—irrespective of whether the wedding was between two women or two men.

The announcement, immediately received the likes of thousands of people, including the CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Interestingly, Facebook’s move comes after Apple decided to include new gay-inclusive "emojis," or emoticons, on its new version of operating system, called iOS 6, slated for release this fall.

Social networking giant has been active in taking steps to include gay and lesbian relationships as back in 2011, the company added "In a Civil Union" and "In a Domestic Partnership" to the list of options in user profiles.
