Obama backs immigration reforms for skilled tech workers

US President Barack Obama has spoke in favour of changing immigration laws for foreign born programmers and engineers that will attract skilled foreign entrepreneurs to the United States and allowing graduate students with advanced technical degrees to stay in the country.

During a speech in Las Vegas, Obama said the immigration reform principles released by a bipartisan group of senators are similar to the positions he outlined during his campaign. As per the current rules, U.S.-educated computer programmers and engineers could be deported once finishing school.

The president outlined that not all startup founders are able to secure visas and stay in the US. He particularly mentioned the case of Instagram which was co-founded by an immigrant -- Brazilian Michel Krieger who studied at Stanford University.

The president said he would only send his proposals to Congress if lawmakers fail to reach a deal.

Besides the president, a handful US Senators - Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Chris Coons, D-Del. – introduced new legislation called the Immigration Innovation Act of 2013. The bill seeks to reform the nation’s immigration laws for high-skilled workers. The idea is to increase the H-1B visa cap from 65,000 to 115,000, along with easing green cards rules.
