Sony to emulate Apple-like strategy to beat iPhones

Sony Corporation, the Japanese electronics company, which is struggling to regain its dominant position in electronics and entertainment, said it plans to adopt an Apple-like strategy of focusing on the high-end smartphones in order to drive growth.

Chief executive Kazuo Hirai, 52, said the company will now focus on smartphones. Sony believe that it has a lot of ground to make up on Apple, which like Samsung, is focused on high end smartphones.

The Korean giant outsells Sony by six to one.

Sony’s retail strategy, in many ways, seems to be taking cues from Apple’s in-store success over the past few years. In a sense, Sony seems to be following Apple’s example in its own unique way.

The Japanese firm has earlier adopted this approach in opening up its retail stores. They were not only similar but the products displayed on a relatively open floor, interrupted only by plain white tables and a row of massive floor-to-ceiling displays.
