Samsung has launched its REX line of "smart" feature phones in India that costs between Rs 4,280 and Rs 6,490 and run on the Java platform.

In total, the South Korean electronics manufacturer revealed four new phones -- the REX 60, REX 70, REX 80, and REX 90 -- and touted them as phones which "combine intelligence and capability to deliver an accessible, next-generation mobile experience". The comes with different screen sizes ranging from 2.8 inches to 3.5 inches with QVGA touch-screen capability, and cameras ranging from 1.3 megapixels to 3.2 megapixels.

"REX devices are designed to seamlessly prioritize and consolidate essential mobile functions that matter most to customers across diverse markets. The result is an extraordinary end-to-end mobile experience with the best value for money," said JK Shin, president and head of IT & mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics, in the statement.

Samsung has pitted the REX series against Nokia’s Asha series of feature phones. REX phones are dual SIM and allow you change SIM cards while the phone is on. They run Samsung's TouchWiz user interface and two of these phones support WiFi. None of the handsets support 3G connectivity either, the company said.

According to Nokia's fourth quarter 2012 financial report, its Asha handsets outsold its flagship Lumia smartphones by almost 2 to 1. The company sold around 9.3 million Asha phones as compared to 6.6 million Lumias in the same quarter. It must be noted that Nokia launched a whopping 12 Asha phones in the past 12 months.

The company said these phones come with many pre loaded apps such as ChatOn, Facebook, Gtalk, Twitter, etc, as well as Opera for a web browser. None of these phones have 3G connectivity.

The REX 60 works with a 2.8-inch QVGA TFT LCD display with a 1.3 megapixel camera on the back and the ability to work with Dual SIM functionality. The REX 70 has a 3-inch QVGA TFT LCD display and a 2 megapixel camera on its back with dual SIM action with “hot swap” – you also get Yahoo Messenger, Gtalk, Facebook, and Twitter.

The REX 80 works with a 3-inch QVGA TFT LCD display and a 3.2 megapixel camera on its back with Dual SIM functionality and each of the messenger options listed for the previous models. The REX 90 (pictured immediately above) has a lovely 3.5-inch HVGA TFT LCD display and a 3.2 megapixel camera with each of the features listed on the lesser models.

Each of these devices works with Bluetooth wireless connectivity as well as USB 2.0 and wifi – and they all connect to data with EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz.

This pits Samsung directly with rival Nokia, which has seen positive sales of its low-cost Asha mobile phones.
