Sony has released a latest generation of console by the name of PlayStation 4. The company said the PlayStation 4 would go on sale this Christmas, but refused to divulge the price or even show the console itself. It is unlikely to cost much less than £300.

The PS4 will be based on a "supercharged PC architecture," with an X86 processor, enhanced PC-style GPU, and 8GB of GDDR5 unified high-speed memory. The controller is called the DualShock 4, and features the Vita-style touchpad and a light bar on the back to identify players. The PS4 is Sony’s first major game machine since the PlayStation 3 went on sale in 2006.

Further, the PS4 will sports a 3D camera to track the various controllers using the bar. Since it will contain 8 CPU cores, it will be able to provide almost 2 teraflops of computational performance.

Additional specs include 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM along with 802.11n WiFi capability, USB 3.0 ports, Bluetooth 2.1 and ports for optical audio, HDMI and even legacy analog AV hook-ups. Though the console will have internal storage, Sony did not detail its size.

Lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny, said "the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago" and that it's goal is "freeing developers from technological barriers."

The PS4 will support suspending and reloading play sessions. The console has a secondary chip for uploading and downloading in the background. Digital games can be played as they are being downloaded. The system supports seamless uploads of gameplay, spectating friends' gameplay sessions in real time as well as integrated chat. Gamers will have to hit the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game. Gamers can share their images and videos to their friends on social networking services such as Facebook.
